It’s here, it’s here! It’s room reveal day for the makeover we gave my 7 year old daughter, Little C, as part of the One Room Challenge. We are both so thrilled with how her room makeover turned out, and I’m so excited to share it here with all of you today! We went for a shabby chic inspired look with lots of blush pink, white, and touches of gold (as per Little C’s request). I love how soft and sweet the room looks now, and it seems so much bigger and feels more serene than it did before. Here’s a tour of Little C’s newly made over pink, white and gold “shabby chic glam” bedroom!

Here’s what we started with:

A bright jewel toned kid's room in purple, hot pink and turquoise - The DIY Mommy

Little C picked this very vibrant purple colour for her walls when she was 4 years old. You can read more about the former room design right here. The room was really exciting and bright, but she was ready for something lighter and more relaxing.

Here’s the room today:

Her bedroom is now so soft and pretty, and with a couple of new pieces of furniture, a whole lot of paint, and some easy DIYs we made it look so much different!

If you haven’t had a chance to follow along, here are some of the things we’ve done to the room along this 5 week makeover process:

Week 1: Mood Board: A Pink, Shabby Chic Girls Bedroom Design
Week 2: DIY Room Painting Tips
Week 3: Easy DIY Kids’ Art Display
Week 3: How to Choose Kids’ Room Furniture that You’ll Both Love
Week 5: Make Shabby Chic Glam Kids’ Bedding
Week 6: TODAY! It’s the reveal!

Come on in:

As you enter the room, you’ll see our DIY art display facing the door, and a vintage vanity that my mom and dad refinished for Little C a few years ago.

On the vanity are some little treasures that my daughter likes to collect and a sweet stool that my mom reupholstered finishes the look.

Turning towards the bed and the East wall, you’ll see Little C’s new Jessica nightstand from The Brick topped with a thrifted lamp I made over. She fills the nightstand with more of her treasures that she doesn’t want her little sisters to fin! She’s been really enjoying having a place to put her alarm clock and water so that they’re easy to reach at night, and the style and durability of this nightstand is just SO good!

The lamp was a thrift store find, and I originally had covered its shade with a ruffle fabric, but then I decided last minute that it needed to contrast the ruffled curtains that we found. Gotta love last minute changes! This sweet floral fabric is Tanya Whelan Zoey’s Garden Birdie White.

I found these beautiful, ruffly white curtains right here.

In this corner, I also made some custom art for Little C and framed it in a golden picture frame. I wanted something floral and inspirational, so I thought these gorgeous watercolour roses with the word “bloom” would be the perfect fit! The bed itself is Little C’s old bed that she simply didn’t want to part with. I would have loved to get her this gorgeous Jessica bed frame, but we finally settled on getting the Jessica nightstand and chest and giving her old bed a quick DIY makeover.

We flipped the bed frame upside down, and then I painted the bed frame with gold metallic paint and the back and side inserts with the same paint as the wall (Behr Paint + Primer colour matched to Cloverdale Prelude to Pink).

The bedding is all handmade, and you can read all about the DIY shabby chic bedding by clicking right here.

This exceptionally tall and beautiful chest of drawers on the other side of the bed is the Jessica Chest from The Brick and we are loving how many clothes it stores! I also think it looks so very pretty with the thrifted gallery wall I designed.

I think it’s important to put a lot of kid-height storage options in children’s rooms, so I found a sweet little set of shabby chic iron hooks and installed them near the chest. Little C likes to hang her purses, her robe, and some of her accessories here.

The light fixture was purchased when we build out house and it was originally hot pink, green and white. I gave it a quick spray paint with some gold metallic paint, and hung some crystal beads off of it to give it a glam makeover.

As for storage in Little C’s room, she has this fabulous closet on the West side of the room (that really needs to be organized… next project), and I also installed a little shelf near the door:

Just like my 4 year old (here was her storage solution for her toys), my 7 year old LOVES Shopkins and other collectibles, so a place to store them is important!

This shelf was from our powder room, and I spray painted the baskets gold, of course!

Little C is so happy with this room, and that was the main goal of this makeover. I’m so thrilled with how big of a difference a couple of new pieces of furniture and a whole lot of DIY has made to this beautiful bedroom!

  1. Oh my goodness! It’s absolutely beautiful Christina! I’m sure she loves all of the sweet little details you created! And, it’s definitely a room she can continue to grow with as well! LOVE it!!!

  2. No offense to the brick, but I’ve always thought of their furniture as tacky and ‘big box store’-y. I never want someone to walk into my house and go, wow looks like a brick show room. But time and time again you BLOW me away with your ability to style it and make it your own. I love that because it really is affordable and practical for a growing family. I love the personal touch you give their pieces.

    Great work Christina!

    1. Thanks so much, Savannah! I really enjoy the challenge of making furniture feel like it belongs in a room without being too “showroom-y”. I think some of the keys are doing a bit of mixing and matching with new pieces, old pieces, and lots of fun DIY accessories. 🙂 Thanks for your encouragement!

It’s such a good feeling to look at something and know you created that!

  19. Im loving the popular shabby chic look for little girls rooms. You did a really nice job! My favourite item in her room is the vanity I would love to find one for my daughter. My eyes are opened now this summer…..

    1. Thank you so much, Alyssa. Christina would be so delighted for a feature on your site. Thank you so much again!

  20. Cristina, hi. I just subscribed to your page as soon as I saw this beautiful room by browsing for pink and gold bedroom diy. It’s so precious. I just love the way you flipped that bed. My 7 year old has one and I’ve been wondering what to do to change it. Are you using the under the bed space at all? I’m afraid I’ll lose that space by flipping the bed. What’s your take on that?

    1. Hi Emily, There was still enough space to store seasonal items under there – just challenging to get to the items at the back! LOL

  21. This is such an adorable vintage room for a little girl! Everything down to the pink scatter rug is just perfect, thanks for sharing this dreamy little space.
