A couple of months ago, I shared with you a plan to transform our semi-formal kitchen dining area into a cheerful & informal breakfast nook. I’ve finally completed this fun little project, and I’m so excited to give you a tour of our new colourful farmhouse breakfast nook today! Come get some happy & colourful dining inspiration, plus there’s a few great DIYs that I think you’ll enjoy.

Here’s what our dining area in the kitchen looked like before:

We thought it was beautiful, but it was just too similar to our new dining room space at the front of our home. We wanted something more casual, more cozy, and more fun. One of my best friends was able to take this dining set and it looks fabulous in her space.

To make this room feel instantly cozier, we ordered the Trudell Round Table from The Brick. There are many reasons that round tables work well for a casual dining space, and I wrote all about them here. I also ordered these Stovall Chairs from The Brick for the farmhouse look I wanted for this room.

One of the first things I did to give this breakfast nook more character was add DIY board and batten to the entire nook:

I did this all myself, and you can read my full tutorial on DIY board and batten right here.

I debated between adding this board and batten treatment and installing a shiplap-look wall. In the end, I did both! I opted for board & batten that goes about 1/3rd up all the walls, and then I installed a shiplap feature wall with peel & stick Stikwood above the board & batten. I love this unique combo!

Next came a DIY bench that I made out of kitchen cabinets to add more coziness and casual seating to this room. You can find that tutorial here.

Here’s how our colourful farmhouse breakfast nook looks now:

Another element in this nook that makes is extra cheerful feeling, is this cow art from The Brick. Nothing says “happy farmhouse” like a cute cow, does it? And my girls just adore this art – they’ve affectionately named her “Moolissa”. Art is an effective and inexpensive way to instantly change the feel of any space, and this piece is no exception! I love that it’s hand painted and has so much colour and texture.

DIY chunky crochet chair pads were another fun but practical project for this space, and I’ll share the full tutorial for them soon. I made them out of thick yarn so that their soft and really easy to whip up! I think they’re a cute addition to these classic farmhouse Stovall chairs.

We can easily fit 5 of these space-saving Stovall chairs around this table – even without the table’s large leaf. The bench I made can act either as seating to the side, or we add the leaf to our Trudell table, pull it closer to the bench, and then we can fit 8 people comfortably here. I love that there are options with how we can configure this space, and you can see how this table looks with the leaf right here.

Cushions to match my colourful DIY drapes, a casual jute rug and some fresh tulips are the perfect finishing touches for this playful room. I’m so happy with the new casual and happy look of our breakfast nook, and how well our new table and chairs function. Our family’s going to have many wonderful breakfasts (and lunches and dinners!) here!

  1. This nook is what first attracted me to your blog. I saw a photo somewhere and your beautiful curtains compelled me to click and find out more. I like the changes you made (and that the curtains are still hanging around). This makeover shows the versatility of your space. Well done.

  2. Hi Christina,

Your home is very lovely! Can you tell me where you found the chair pads you have in your new breakfast nook? I have these same chairs in white but, they are a little uncomfortable for very long without a pad underneath. Thanks for the inspiration and keep up the great work.
