Creating a Story with Doors – Mom’s Lake House Project

It’s been a little while, so I’m hoping that you remember the project we’ve been working on with my parents – Mom’s Lake House. Do you? We broke ground in November, got “out of the hole” in February, and then in April I shared with you the roof going on and some of the decisions that had to be made. Now, let’s fast forward to this month – July 2017. There are still a lot of decisions that have to be made as we reach the “lock up” stage of the build, but I’m excited to share with you one of the biggest decisions that we’ve finalized for Mom’s Lake House: the exterior doors. In this blog post and video tour, you’ll also see the colour of siding that we picked and how gorgeous this lake lot looks in the summer. I’m guessing we’ll be crashing my parents’ lake house as much as possible when it’s done!

Doors take up a lot of real estate on your home, and I think they can really highlight the style and feel of your home. This is especially true for exterior doors as they’re one of the first things people will see as they approach your house. Doors can truly set the stage for your home, tell a story, and set a mood.

We are very fortunate to be working with Masonite on our Mom’s Lake House project, and we couldn’t be happier with the doors we ended up choosing for this lakeside home. But let’s back up a little. How did we and how do YOU choose the right doors for your home?

First, it’s important to define the style of your home. Need help with this one? Take the What’s My Style quiz on the Masonite website to help you narrow down  your style and find doors that match.

The style of Mom’s Lake House is craftsman with its classic lines and warm tones, so we choose an absolutely stunning craftsman style door from Masonite with beautiful details like a dentil shelf and simple inset panels.

Once you’ve sorted out your style, you can nail down your budget to help you choose which doors will work for you. The Masonite website has icons that help you determine the approximate cost of each door.

The front of Mom’s Lake House is adorable, but I think the back is its crowning glory:

Three levels of balconies take in all the lake views that this home has to offer. The large windows are an important feature here, but so are patio doors.

To maximize the view and the 9 foot ceilings on the main floor, we chose Masonite’s Vista Grande doors with grille details. They’re stunning!

They’ll let in so much light to this home, and they have the classic craftsman cottage look that we’re aiming for.

Here are more photos of how the home looks this month:

As you can see, we decided to go for a slightly darker tone of siding than we originally planned to give a little more contrast between the siding and the white trim everywhere.

Now, what colour to paint the front door? What colour would YOU paint it?
