This DIY Jitter Glitter Necklace set is a fun and simple first day of school gift idea for any little one heading off for the first time!

As you probably know, Little C is headed to Kindergarten in less than a month. I’ve been going through all sorts of emotions as I process this big step in my little girl’s (and my) life. I wanted to make a small but special gift for her first day of school – something that would make her feel special and know how much she’s loved. I came up with the idea of a “jitter glitter” back to school necklace set after I saw this bracelet set and this first day of school note on Pinterest. I combined the two ideas, re-wrote my own poem, and created a fun little gift for my girlie.

How to Make a Jitter Glitter Back to School Necklace Gift Set

Supplies:

  • two small vials with corks (I found mine at Michaels)
  • glitter
  • nylon string
  • 2 pieces of 8 1/2 x 11″ cardstock (plain or patterned on one side)

Directions:

Cut two small piece of string that’s long enough to wrap and knot around the neck of a vial, and two others that are large enough to tie and fit over your head and your child’s head.

Fill both of the vials with glitter (do it over a garbage can!), and then tie the small piece of string around both of the necks of the vials. Do it loosely at first.

Tie the ends of one of the longer strings together in a nice, tight knot and then pull it through the string tied on the vial as shown above.

Tighten the string around the neck of the vial, and then bring one looped end of the large string through the other looped end and pull upwards as shown above.

Repeat for the second necklace.

Then, print on the graphic below to print off the Jitter Glitter Necklace poem and print it on the plain side of your cardstock paper.

The poem reads:

Here are two necklaces
One’s big and one’s small
For your first day of school
That is coming this Fall

They’re full of fairy dust
That sparkles and glitters
To help you feel calm
And get rid of your jitters

I’ll wear one necklace
And I’ll think of you
The other one’s yours
So you’ll think of me too

Wear it to school
While you learn and you play
To remember your mommy
While you’re away

Happy first day of school!

Fold the card in half with the poem on the outside, and then cut two small slits in the top right hand inside of the card. Slip the necklaces through the slits as shown to display them.

  1. This is so sweet. My daughter is off to first grade, I am much better with her going to school now. The first day last year I held it together. But I was hurting on the inside. It is such an emotional roller coaster. I love this idea, so great!

  2. What a big milestone! I still have 3 more years until my first goes to kindergarten and I already hate the idea of my little girl growing up! I love this cute idea! I think it holds a lot of meaning for both mother and child. Thanks for sharing!

  3. This is SO incredibly sweet! As a teacher, I know how hard back to school can be for kids (and parents too!). SUCH a sweet idea for Mommy and child!

  4. This post almost made me cry, because my little girl is going to full day (gulp) Kindergarten in one week and I am going to miss our little afternoons together dearly. This is such a cute idea, I wonder if I could get this together in the next week for her, she would just LOVE it. Thanks for sharing!
