When designing kids’ bedrooms, it helps save time and money to create a space that can grow with them rather than something that has to be changed down the road. When I had the exciting opportunity to makeover my friend’s son’s room recently, we tried to design something that could stay with him well into his teen years, and I think we succeeded! Here are some tips on how to create a timeless bedroom design for your own kids, plus a video tour of K’s updated modern nautical bedroom.

Use timeless furniture

Buying furniture that has simple lines and that’s not too juvenile looking will stand the test of time. This incredible Driftwood Captian’s Pier Bed from The Brick is the most important piece in this room, and because it’s a regular sized twin bed with simple lines it will grow with Little K from now until his teens.

Keep the big pieces neutral

The other great thing about this bed is that its beautiful driftwood finish can match almost anything. If K ever tires of the deep orange and bright blue in his new bedroom, the bed could easily coordinate with other colours.

Add personality with accessories

To add personality and whimsy into your child’s bedroom, you can use bright colours and patterns through accessories like pillows, lamps, decor and toys. These items are easy to change later if needed, and they’re not too expensive. We found lots of amazing accessories in store at The Brick (like those fantastic industrial wall scones, the small clock, some pillows and some of the nautical accessories) and you could also easily DIY throw pillows for more colour and texture.

Tip: Arrange books in rainbow order or display books in a specific colour scheme to add a dose of practical colour to a kid’s room.

Involve your child in the design process

Since your child is the one that will be living in his room, ask him what he’d like to include. You can always edit his ideas to suit your budget and timeless approach, but make sure to include some items that will make him feel cozy and happy in his own little space. Little K loves orange, so we made sure to include lots of pops of orange in his new bedroom design.

Tip: Lining the backs of bookcases with painted pieces of paper is a low cost and noncommittal way to add bright colour to furniture.
