Make a Winter Wall Hanging for Under $10

We had our first snowfall last week. This is always a bittersweet day for us up here in Alberta, Canada. We sigh because we realize we need to dig up our old winter boots, make sure the snow tires are on our car and brace ourselves for freezing weather. But then we remember how beautiful and exciting winter is up here. Not only is our landscape transformed into a frozen white wonderland, but there is never ending entertainment that comes with the snow. My dad and Little A immediately made the first snowman of the year last week – they had a blast! Winter is long and cold up here in Canada, but it’s also so very beautiful and fun!

Today I wanted to share with you how I made a beautiful DIY winter wall hanging for less than $10 from a photo I snapped on that first snow day last week (you can download it and use it too, if you’d like!). Then, I’m sharing how you can win 1 of 3 $5000 shopping sprees at The Brick and 1 of 150 exclusive VIP Black Friday shopping experiences with the chance to win your purchase by sharing why you think it’s #betteruphere in Canada! Scroll to the bottom of this post to find out how to enter.

So first off, let me tell you how I made this pretty DIY winter wall hanging and how you can make one too! I think it looks very rustic and lovely – it will be the perfect addition to my Christmas decor this year (which I can’t WAIT to show you).

I snapped this photo out our kitchen window with my cell phone last week:

I thought it was so frosty and pretty that I blew it up and sent if off to my local print shop to have printed in black & white on a big piece of 24″ x 36″ paper (an engineering print). It was only $3!

(Don’t have your own snowy Canadian woodland scene? You can download my high-res photo here.)

DIY Winter Wall Hanging

Materials:

  • black & white photo printed on 36″ x 24″ paper (an “engineering print”)
  • two 37″ strips of thin wood (I used door stop trim)
  • 2 small eye screws
  • twine
  • glue gun
  • wood stain / paint

Directions:

Have your art printed as an engineering print at your local print shop. It will be 36″ by 24″.

Stain or paint the two 37″ strips of wood. I used Varathane wood stain in Espresso.

Screw the eye screws into the top of each side of one of the wood pieces. Mine are 1 1/2″ from each end.

Cut a piece of twine about 3′ long and tie each end to the eye screws.

With a glue gun, glue the top and bottom of your art to the back of the wood pieces. My art overlaps the wood about 3/4″.

All done! Isn’t it easy and fun?

This could also make a beautiful backdrop for a Holiday party or some Christmas photos.

  1. This looks great! I would love to do something like this to fill a particular blank spot in our living room. Can you name the print shop? Getting a photo printed that large is usually expensive – I assume this is on a different type of paper than typical photo prints.

  2. Love this!!! What a great idea! I’ll have to dig up a picture of snow since we don’t have winters (or trees) like that here in southern Arizona. Awesome tip about the engineering print too!

  3. I just found your blog, and keep finding awesome ideas. Love the winter wall hanging. Thanks for the tip about engineering prints!
I’m trying to learn how to make chalkboard art (which is how I found your blog). Quick question: In your “Spring is Sure to Follow” printable, what font is the word “Spring” in?
Thanks for all the great ideas!

  4. Hi, I just came across your blog and loved the winter picture. Here in Minnesota we’re getting a scene very much like that! I would love a copy of your scenic shot, but the link to download the image is broken. Is the photo still available? Thanks for sharing!

  5. I have taken pics with my phone and have gone to enlarge them, but they get pixelated. Interested how you got such a large size photo without losing resolution.
