Make Baby Leg Warmers from Socks by The DIY Mommy

Baby leg warmers are cute and practical. Not only do they look adorable, they cushion baby’s knees when crawling and keep baby’s legs warm on a cool day. Baby leg warmers also make diaper changes a snap! Boutique-style baby leg warmers can be expensive, so I’ve devised a way to create them from an inexpensive pair of children’s knee-high socks. My total material cost was under $5.00, and these leg warmers only took me 15 minutes to sew! Want to make some for your little angel? Here’s how:

Materials:

  • 1 pair of children’s knee-high socks (shoe size: 5-10)
  • 1 package 3/4″ width knitted elastic
  • sewing machine & coordinating thread

Directions:

  • Cut each sock into two pieces at the ankle.

  • Using foot piece, cut off toe. Measure 2″ from cut, trim at this marking. This makes your elastic casing.

  • Using elastic, make a marking at 1/2″. Wrap elastic around baby’s ankle (snug, but not tight). Make a second marking where elastic wraps around to meet first marking.
  • Cut elastic 1/2″ beyond second marking. This makes your elastic ankle bands.

  • Fold elastic casing pieces in half to create casing. Pin to right side of long sock piece.

  • Sew casing & sock piece together using an interlock machine stitch made for knits. Leave a 1″ opening to pull elastic through.
  • Attach a safety pin to elastic piece. Pull through casing.

  • Overlap & join elastic piece to form a circle – lining up markings.
  • Sew together using a zigzag stitch – backstitch twice to secure.

  • Press leg warmers if desired.

  3. The J.Crew outlet had the cutest argyle socks in the crewcuts section this week – I just made two pairs for our baby-to-be. I hope the baby is a girl otherwise someone will be getting a super cute gift!

    1. Hi Marion! The elastic is for the ankle. Babies ankles are quite small, and most socks will be larger than their tiny ankles, so the elastic helps cinch the sock snugly.

  4. I love these have made several pair for my soon to be born granddaughter. However Im going to attempt to make the little lace leg warmers out of trouser socks and lace… which me luck!! Great blog!
