Mood Board: A Cheerful, Colourful Farmhouse Breakfast Nook

After converting our front formal sitting room into a dining room last Spring (read about that here), I’ve come to realize that the large formal looking table set in our kitchen now feels redundant. After much thought and some help from my friends at The Brick, I’ve decided to convert our kitchen dining area into a more casual, more cheerful and more cozy farmhouse style breakfast nook. Let me share with you my layout ideas for the space, a mood board, and some DIY projects I have in mind for our colourful farmhouse breakfast nook.

Here’s what our kitchen dining space looks like now:

It’s definitely beautiful and I still love this dining set, but now that our front room is a dining room that looks like this:

It feels sort of funny to have two dining spaces in our home that function in a very similar way. Both areas have large, rectangular tables with more formal looking seating, and I think our kitchen dining area could use some “upping” in the cozy & casual factors.

I’ve always wanted to incorporate a window bench seat somewhere in our kitchen dining area, however we’re eventually going to turn the large window in the bay into a door out to a deck. My idea is to create a built-in dining bench with storage where the hutch now stands to create a cozy spot to eat at the kitchen table or read. I’ll build this out of fridge cabinets and make a cozy DIY cushion for on top.

Then, I thought a rustic round table would make this area feel more like a cozy breakfast nook than a formal dining area:

This is the Trudell Round Table from The Brick, and I think it’s beautiful but still nice and rustic looking. It’s solid wood, which I know stands up to my lax housekeeping skills and my kids messes, plus it can extend to a large oval if we want to sit more people here. It’s round shape will make our breakfast nook feel intimate and cozy, and its rich colour will add some warmth to the space too.

I like to pair unexpected chairs with tables, and these Stovall Chairs from The Brick are one of my favourite shapes:

They have such a great vintage industrial vibe that’s the perfect contrast to the warmth of the table, plus they’ll be really easy to clean. If I want to make them softer, I’ll make some DIY chair cushions in colourful fabrics to match our existing drapes in the space (which I’m definitely keeping even though they’re almost 5 years old at this point – I just love them)!

Behind the built-in bench seat that I want to make, I’d like to give the wall a board and batten treatment like I’ve done for our fireplace wall and our dining room. A fun piece of art or mirror will also help make the nook feel cheerful and bright.

  1. Your colour pallet is exactly the one I love. Tourquise and a pale aqua colour are everywhere in my house.
I really don’t like everything white and grey. Living in Canada we need COLOUR. Love everything you do. Thanks.

  2. Hello. I watched your video on the ikea cabinet turned into nook. I would like to do same thing but the height is 15” so with the frame build up and pillow doesn’t that make the height over 18”? This is standard bench height. What is your height?
