Sometimes the most fun home decor and design projects are the ones you do for someone else. They stretch your imagination and force you to put your feet in someone else’s shoes – what will they like? What will make them happy and comfortable in this room? The new, ultra modern theater room / man cave I helped my hubby design was a project just like this. I’ve been waiting for a while to be able to share this reveal with you, and I’m so excited that the day is finally here! Meet our new basement theater room that was designed solely with the love of my life in mind – my dear husband.

When my husband and I first got married just over 10 years ago, he made a lot of sacrifices. He wanted to stay near me, so he stopped working in the oil field up North and found a local job. He sold his motorcycle and his Ski-Doo so that he could buy me a ring. He and I lived in a garage for 7 years before we built our current home, and then Sean built our house over the course of the year WHILE working a job that sometimes had him busy for over 12 hours each day.

When an opportunity came up for me to work with The Brick to give my husband the theatre room of his dreams, I knew that this could be one way I could say “thank you” to my guy for giving up so many of his toys for the growth of our little family. This was something that could once again be just his – a place for him to simply relax and call his own.

Don’t get me wrong – I’m not saying we won’t ever crash his solo basement party. We already have and the girls and I will continue to do so every now and then. Not only is this a great man cave, but it also has all the features a theatre room for a family needs.

Remember the before? This is what we started with:

Theater-Room-Man-Cave-BEFORE

It was a big, blank slate that was painted, well…. slate. And it has faux slate floors. And slate-coloured cabinetry.

My husband is a huge Star Trek fan, loves a monochromatic scheme, and enjoys the colour orange. I don’t love any of those things, but I was happy to work with Sean to create a space that displayed the things he loved.

We came up with an outer space inspired look for the room (that wasn’t too obviously “spacey”) that featured dark colours, pops of rusty orange, chrome accents, and all of the fabulous technology that’s a must for any theater room. You can see our original mood board for this space here.

I really wanted Sean to choose the sound system and TV that he wanted for this space, so his job was to research what would work best in the theater room by browsing The Brick website and reading reviews on all of the products.

His findings were that The Brick carried one of the best brands of speakers – Klipsch. The quality of the sound coming out of these is simply amazing and the price point isn’t bad at all. We feel like we’re definitely in a theater when we’re watching a movie down here!

Sean chose to go with these Klipsch 39″ tall tower speakers for the back of the room, 42″ Klipsch tower speakers for the front corners, a Klipsch 400W R-12W subwoofer speaker, and a Klipsch 400W R-25C centre channel speaker.

Sean chose an LG 65″ UHD Smart LED TV from The Brick for the theater room (here’s a similar one from The Brick in the 43″ size) and the picture on this thing is amazing! To make the TV really pop, he mounted it on a panel of black marble that he secured to the wall. We flanked the TV & the marble panel with grey velvet curtains to add a little luxury to the space.

If you study the room closely, you might find some very blatant Trekkie decor, but I think we’ve managed to keep it relatively subtle. 🙂

One of the hidden gems in this room is this Yamaha 7.2 Channel Receiver from The Brick hiding behind the cabinet doors. Sean loved setting the receiver up – it included a microphone that you place in the center of the room that helps set-up your speakers perfectly. It also has built-in WiFi, Bluetooth functionality, and you can even operate it with an app from your phone!

One of my personal favourite pieces in this room is this gorgeous and oh-so-modern sectional. It’s the Zane sectional from The Brick, and doesn’t is just have the sleekest lines?! The back rests can pop up and down for ultimate flexibility, and I really love the subtle tufting on the seats. The legs are really lovely too – they’re simple and have a polished chrome finish to give our room that modern, outer space feeling that Sean wanted.

Behind the sofa, my husband mounted a translucent blue onyx stone panel from a local company he works for, Prima Stone.  He trimmed it with a metal border that’s raised from the wall so he can install some lighting behind it later on.

He really loved the rusty orange accents in the onyx, so we added that in elsewhere in the room to break up all of the black and grey. It was a happy accident that the Klipsch speakers had orangey coloured accents, so we left the covers off of them to show off how well they blend into the space.

This Nebula pillow was a fun way to add a hint of Trekkie-ness to this room and incorporate some of that colour.

In the corner beside the door, Sean and I designed a small little bar area with more black marble accents and really sleek and simple cupboards. We even installed a bit of open shelving to proudly display his candy collection (which was really hard for me to keep him from eating before this photoshoot, let me tell you!).

My husband is so happy with how his ultra modern man cave turned out, and I am too! It’s such a modern looking room, but it’s still comfortable, interesting and it gives you a glimpse into the sorts of things that Sean loves. I’m sure we’ll spend many happy evenings down here relaxing and enjoying our very own little theater room!

I’d like to send out a special “thank you” to The Brick for helping me make this dream come true for my hard working husband. He is absolutely thrilled. He would say thank you himself, but he’s busy gaming down there. 😉
