Our Vintage Industrial Kitchen – Now With More Colour!

As much as I love the black and white bones of our DIY vintage industrial kitchen, I’ve been craving the addition of colour in the space for quite a while now. The last few weeks of pregnancy have really ignited some sort of maniacal nesting monster in me, and it’s really worked to my advantage – I’m getting lots of projects done around the house! With the addition of some colour (in the form of fabric, paint and accessories), I transformed our “almost done” kitchen into my final, beautiful dream kitchen this past week.

When I saw this fabric from Fabric.com, I instantly knew it would be the inspiration for the colour I’d infuse into this space. It has my favourite colour – turquoise – and it’s modern without being too harsh. I love the bits of grey in the pattern to tie in my soft grey wall colour, and the fact that the fabric looked a little “distressed” which echoes my DIY shabby chic chalk painted table and gallery wall artwork. The fabric is an indoor/outdoor fabric, which works really well for drapes since it’s easy to clean and won’t fade.

I made four drape panels with grommet tops to dress the bay window in our breakfast nook (I’ll share that simple tutorial soon), and look at the difference they make in this space! They make the walls looks higher, and they add so much warmth and cheer to our kitchen.

I also painted our old & boring metal bar stools with DIY chalk paint in a happy turquoise colour (I made the paint exactly the same way I made it for our table) and distressed the edges slightly so a little bit of black would show through. I reupholstered the seat cushions in the same fabric as the curtains (I’ll also share this tutorial soon). They add just the right amount of colour into the kitchen and tie in the new drapes well. Plus, I only spent about $30 on them as opposed to the $350 I was considering on spending to buy new stools!

(I was completely giddy with excitement to stage and photograph this room, and took great joy in the 3.5 seconds that it was clean until my little monsters – and me – descended upon it again!)

I love how my teal hobnail glasses (from Zulily) look with the new pops of colour in this room. They look so pretty with a simple table setting using white & mint plates, gold chargers, and chartreuse green napkins.

The colours make me dream of summer. Some greenery (fake, because that’s the only way I can keep it looking pretty) adds the finishing touch to the table, island, window sill and stove area.

I love the relaxed, family-friendly vibe of our breakfast nook. We spend so much time here!

It makes me so proud of my hubby and myself to think about where we started with this kitchen:

A lot of dreaming and a lot of DIY goes a long way with a small budget! I’m looking forward to spending many, many years with my little family of (almost) 5 in our kitchen – flipping pancakes, baking cookies, telling each other about our day, praying, and laughing.

  4. I saw your kitchen on House of Turquoise today and clicked through because I LOVE your curtains! They’re exactly what I’ve been looking for for my dining room. Sadly, the link takes me to fabric.com’s home page, not to the fabric itself. Do you know the name of it so i can search for it?

  5. Love this color combination. What is the name of the wall color. I have been looking for a neutral tone that will look good with blue. This looks great.

    1. Thanks so much, Eileen! Our stools were a gift from my inlaws several years ago. They were from Walmart I believe. I really love my kitchen and I certainly spend a lot of time there!

  9. Beautiful kitchen! Love how fresh and inviting, yet family friendly, it is. Where did you get the family rules wall art and frame?

    Thanks:)

  10. Beautiful kitchen/eating nook. I would love to do the same treatment(s) to my bay windows. Can you provide info on the curtain rods? Thanks!

    1. Thanks, Alisa! The curtain rods were just inexpensive ones from Home Depot. I bought two small ones and one long one, and mounted them on top of each of the three windows.

  11. LOVE this kitchen! Can you tell me where the sink and countertops are from? Are they from IKEA, the same as the cabinets? Thanks for your time!

    1. Thanks so much, Jennifer! Yes, the sink and countertops are also from Ikea. I love our huge sink, and I white washed and sealed the butcher block counter tops and they’re great too!

  12. I’m building my kitchen from scratch, and I wanted the look of built-in fridge. So, when I saw your kitchen remodel it was fate! I’m using everything from Ikea that I can grab up,especially cabinets. So, how and what did you do to get your fridge/ cabinets flush? 2 thumbs up on your kitchen! !

    1. Thanks so much, Susan! We placed them a few inches away from the walls, and then bought the wider side panels and cut them down to the size we needed. So, there’s a gap between the wall and the back of the cupboards, but it’s hidden by the wide side panels. We were plotting ways to use the gap (like building custom cupboard boxes), but we ran out of time and did it this way.

  13. hello! I love your website and the kitchen redo! Do you remember the turquoise color you used on your stools?

  14. I’m trying to figure out which ceiling fan you have up there from Kitchler. Any chance you could help? Thanks!
