Today I’m going to share with you how to make a child’s costume dress and cape inspired by Anna from the movie Frozen. In case you missed it, I shared how to make an Elsa inspired dress on Wednesday. You can check it out by clicking here. Thankfully, my 2 year old Little A loves Anna and my 5 year old Little C loves Elsa. Perfect! There was no fighting over who would get which dress. Thanks again to OnlineFabricStore.net for providing the fabric for this project; these dresses are already VERY well loved.

I designed two cute snow princess dresses for Little C and Little A that are easy to sew and easy to slip on and off. I think both of these qualities are SO important when you have multiple kids in the house and need quick projects and costumes that kids don’t have to ask for help to get in and out of.

This pattern and tutorial will make a child’s costume dress that will fit a most 2 – 6 year olds. You can adjust the skirt length, the elastic at the waist, and the elastic at the neckline to make the dress smaller or larger. It’s a nice, adjustable, easy pattern!

Cut the bottom front and bottom back bodice out of the stretch velvet fabric, cut the bottom front bodice out of the sequin fabric, cut the top front and back bodices out of the white sparkle organza, and cut the sleeve out of the white sparkle organza. We’ll cut out the skirt and cape pieces later.

Pin the sequin front bodice bottom to the velvet front bodice bottom and stay stitch them together about 1/4″ from the edge. Cut a strip of the gold sequin fabric that’s 2 1/2″ wide, and about 45″ long (the width of the fabric). Fold the strip in half lengthwise, and then gather it on the raw edge to create a ruffle. Pin the ruffle to the bottom edge of the bodice as shown.

Pin and then stitch the upper front bodice to the lower front bodice, matching their centers and using a 1/2″ seam allowance. I used a serger to finish this seam, but you could also use a zig zag stitch on a regular machine to finish. Use a nice, sharp needle when you’re sewing chiffon so that it doesn’t tear afterwards!

Fold the sleeves in half lengthwise, and sew them together at the under arm seam.

(You’ll notice I did this step later in the Elsa inspired dress tutorial, after the skirt. It doesn’t really matter if you do the skirt or the sleeves first when sewing these dresses – it’s up to you!)

Pin and sew the sleeves to the bodice as shown above, right sides together, using a serger or a regular machine with a zig zag stitch to finish the seam. The sleeve edges can be finished with a narrow rolled hem or serger.

Sew the bodice top back piece to the bodice bottom piece (right sides together with the cape sandwiched in the middle) using a 1/2″ seam. Finish the edge with a serger or zig zag stitch.

Create a casing along the top of the sleeves and bodice by serging or zig-zagging the top edge to finish it, and then turning the top edge over about 5/8″ and sewing it down. Thread a piece of elastic through this casing that’s about 15″ long to form the neck opening.

Sew the front and back bodices together at the sides using a 1/2″ seam allowance.

To make the skirt, measure your child from their waist to where you want the skirt to fall (my 5 year old measured about 27″ inches from waist to floor, and my 2 year old measured about 21″). Cut a the royal blue satin so that it is the length you need, and then cut it in half on the fold of the fabric so that you have a front and back skirt piece. Do the same for the mirror organza fabric.

Sew each skirt together at the side seams (finish with a serger or zig zag stitch), and then sew the two skirts together at the top edges with the organza layer on top of the satin layer. Sew a long running stitch around the top of the layered skirt, and then pull it to gather the skirt as shown.

Pin the skirt to the bodice, right sides together, and adjust the gathers to fit. Sew the skirt to the bodice using a 1/2″ seam allowance and seam finishing with a serger or zig zag.

You can finish the bottom edges of the skirt with a narrow rolled hem or a serger like I did.

Finally, cut a piece of elastic that’s about 10″ long (or about 1/2 of your child’s waist circumference), and stitch it to the back half of the skirt seam. This creates a nice snug fitting waist, but allows the dress to still be taken off and on easily.

To make the cape, first cut a strip off of the magenta charmeuse that measures about 3 inches.

With what’s remaining of the yard of satin charmeuse, sew or narrow-roll hem around two long sides and one short side. You can round the bottom edges like I did. Then, gather the remaining long edge by sewing a running stitch close to the raw edge, and pulling the threads to gather. It can be gathered to be about 18″ wide.

Then, pin the strip you first cut off to the gathered cape piece, right sides together, so that long edge of the strip lines up with the top gathered edge of the cape. Match the centers of both pieces when you pin. Serge or zig zag around all edges of the tie, attaching it to the cape. I used a contrasting (royal blue) serger thread when I serged around my cape.

  1. Frustrated to tears… How do I pin together the my top front bodice and lower front bodice? I can’t figure out how to line up the right sides together and flip it so that there are no stitches showing.

I must figure this out, my four-year-old is counting on me. Please help!
