Kids are huge mess-makers, am I right?! And then when summer holidays hit… boom! The mess gets worse because they have so much more time at home to make it. All too often, us moms put all the responsibility on ourselves to keep our homes tidy and clean when in fact there’s one trick that will help keep your home clean all summer long. Ready for it?

Get your kids to help you clean your home.

That’s it! No matter their age or disposition, it’s never too early to teach your kiddos how to tidy and clean your home. After all, they’ve helped contribute to the mess, and teaching them how to clean up is a great skill that will help them later on in their life.

There are so many ways to do this, and you need to find a method that works best for you and your kids. It might not always be easy or pleasant (believe me, our clean-up times aren’t always rainbows and unicorns), but it will get easier and easier as you make it a routine. For our family, we clean together after supper every night (everyone has age-appropriate chores to do like emptying the dishwasher, sweeping the floor and wiping the table), and then we do one giant family house clean every Saturday morning after breakfast. The latter involves cleaning the entire main floor including vacuuming and mopping the floors, and then cleaning the bedrooms and bathrooms. I find that rewards work well to help motivate my kids to clean, so on weekdays they can have a dessert after they do their dinner chores, and on Saturdays they can choose a new app for their tablet after the big chore morning. That’s effective for our family, but every family is different so experiment to see what works for yours!

Recently, we’ve started using the Miele Blizzard CX1 bagless vacuum for cleaning our floors. You can find it at The Brick, and I think my kids love it almost more than I do! Little A has become our queen of vacuuming the rugs under the tables & our upholstery since we got this vacuum, and the quickly adjustable handle and easily maneuverable floorhead makes it easy for kids to use.

We have a combination of hard laminate flooring and several area rugs, and I’m really liking how this vacuum performs on both. At first I was worried about how I’d do with a corded vacuum, but the Miele Blizzard CX1 has 33 foot radius, so I only have to move outlets once for our main floor! I’m also really impressed with how much more power this vacuum has compared to our old cordless – the trade-off is really a no-brainer.

It’s really simple for me or the kids to adjust the suction power on the vacuum (simply turn a dial) when we need to change from cleaning our rugs to our hard floors, and I’ve also been using it to clean our upholstery.

Another great feature of the Miele Blizzard CX1 that I’m enjoying is the way the dust and debris is collected and emptied. The vacuum separates fine dust from larger particles, and then the ComfortClean function automatically cleans the fine dust filter once it’s full every few months. The rest of the larger dust and debris is really easy to throw out – you simply lift the dust canister from the vacuum, put it over the garbage and press a button. It’s a really neat system!

The Miele Blizzard CX1 bagless vacuum has definitely been a great addition to our family cleaning tools, and I’m so happy that it’s easy for the kids to use too. After all, having the kiddies help me and my hubby clean up all of the mess we’ve made together is my number one trick to keeping our home clean this summer. When we all work together and get ‘er done as quick as possible, we have more time to enjoy our summer holidays together doing things we love!

Now tell me: Do you involve your kids in house cleaning? How do you get them to help? I’d love to know your tricks!

  1. Hey Christina, getting my kids involved in cleaning the house is usually a huge chore for me, but with the proper tools and incentives, they are always willing to help. This vacuum cleaner looks like it’s the perfect incentive for my kids to clean more frequently. Thanks.
