6 Home Decor Basics to Invest In

1: Sofa

A comfortable sofa in your favourite colour (or a neutral colour, if you can’t decide) can last you and your family a long time. Look for durable fabrics like leather, chenille and velvet so that your couch is easy to clean and live with. Our Meredith Velvet Sofa from The Brick not only has a traditional and timeless look, but it’s soft and comfortable and holds up to our messy family well. Our Paris Sectional is also still going strong, and has since been moved to our basement as we create a tween-friendly hangout space for our girls. I can’t wait to share that with you soon! It’s also a lovely neutral grey colour that goes with just about anything.

2: Area Rugs

Rugs really help anchor a room, and they add comfort too! I love a good rug, and a neutral one in a simple pattern like my parents’ Taza Area Rug will match with a variety of furniture and accessories. It’s also easy to clean and the pattern is a classic.

Another personal favourite? The Ahmar Area rug. It’s so striking with its black diamonds on white, and super comfy with the shag texture! I could have one of these in almost every room; it’s so versatile.

3: Light Fixtures

Good quality light fixtures can make a bold statement in a room. Spend a little extra on a fixture that’s large enough for your room (check out my 7 Home Decor Measurements You Need to Know post for that info!) and that’s well made.

4: Sheets

You can never go wrong with a good, white sheet set especially if it has a higher thread count. That means it’s going to last dozens of washings and feel soft and luxurious – it’s such a treat!

I really like this 820 thread count set from The Brick made from 100% Egyptian cotton. It’s so soft to the touch, and has lasted many washings. It’s the perfect addition to my parents’ gorgeous lake house bedroom!

5: Dining Table

Dining tables are a highly used item in any home, and I think it’s smart to invest in something that’s solid wood in a shape you love.

We really like our Keswick Dining table because of its statement legs, but especially because it’s made of solid pine and SO durable. It’s heavy and strong; just what our family needs!

6: Mattress

Have you ever slept on a terrible mattress? Then you’ll know that this one is SO important! Investing in a high quality mattress that works for your sleeping style will help you get lots more rest and effect your health overall. My parents have a high quality mattress set from The Brick in their lake house master bedroom, and we also have one in our  master bedroom.

My mom & dad spent a long time looking for the perfect mattress for their new home, and this one was at the very top of their list. It’s plush with gel memory foam, but features supportive pocket coils underneath. It’s the perfect blend of soft and supportive!

These six items are worth investing in for our home; you’ll use them a lot and enjoy them for years to come!

Now tell me: What do YOU think? Would you agree with this list, or are there different items you’d rather invest in for your home? I’d love to know!

  1. This is very helpful! My wife and I have been planning to change my home decor for last few days. Especially liked the Area Rugs and Dining Table. Teza Area Rug seems great item to check but the Dining is pretty expensive for me. Thanks for sharing all these useful items.
