Welcome to my official 2016 home tour! I realized that I haven’t given you a tour of my entire house – including those sometimes forgotten rooms like the laundry room and bathrooms – since last year, so I thought today was a great time to post an update. If you’ve been reading my blog for the last little while, you’ll have seen most of these photos before, but I will throw in a few new ones of my summery living room. This is also a special day because it’s Canadian Bloggers Home Tour time! At the bottom of this post, you’ll find links to 8 more home tours from my Canadian blogging friends. Please pay them a visit; we have so many talented DIYers and decorators in our beautiful country!Continue reading
This was the summer of “let’s work on curb appeal“. In my head I’d skip outside, dig up the perfect little flower beds in a day (maybe two days?), my hubby would slap up the simple porch columns in an afternoon, and I’d have everything painted and ready for the following weekend. HA HA HA. Like all things home building / renovating related – everything takes 10 times longer than you dream. In this case, it was totally worth all of the literal blood, sweat and tears we shed to make Our DIY House look more complete from the outside this summer. Here’s a quick gallery of what we did to our home this summer to up it’s curb appeal, and how we build our DIY porch columns.Continue reading

In case you are new here, here’s a quick background on Our DIY House: We started building our home by ourselves in 2012 (we lived in an 800 square foot garage on our property previously). We moved in July 2013 and have been puttering around since then and working on the finishing details. You can see our basic floor plan here. We love our new home, but it’s definitely been a challenge to finish it on a budget and while we are raising 3 kids and while Hubby has his contracting business. Welcome to our work-in-progress!
In 2012, after 6 years of living in our tiny Garage House (if you missed it, here’s the grand tour), we decided to begin construction on a new, larger home on our acreage – “Our DIY House”. We broke ground during the first week in August of 2012.
It was challenging, exhilerating, growing, frustrating, fun… and our most exciting DIY project to date! Here’s a little video about how we built Our DIY House. We’re still not quite done, but we’re enjoying the journey.

We have a slightly awkward shaped, narrow entry hall in Our DIY House. When you walk into our home, you’ll see a hallway leading straight to the kitchen directly in front of you, and to the right of that are our stairs. It took me almost a year to sort out the best way to configure our entry. We had to use it for a while to see what was best to put in – or not to put in -it. Over the past few months, I’ve come up with some great solutions!Continue reading
