Just before Christmas last year, my sister and brother-in-law purchased and moved into a beautiful, modern loft in the heart of downtown Edmonton.  With its gorgeous high ceilings, exposed duct work and incredible view of the city, it’s a dreamy place for any young couple who loves being downtown! When they requested my help with making over their space, I jumped at the chance. Though this modern space is a lot different than what I’ve designed in the past, I really love the modern industrial aesthetic, and wanted to get my hands on this fabulous modern condo home!

The first room we tackled was the kitchen. The condo has a very open floor plan with only its bathrooms, den and bedroom closed off, so the kitchen is a really important element to making this condo feel updated and more suited to my sister & brother’s style.

With the help of some gorgeous Samsung appliances from The Brick, we transformed this space from blah to a modern scandi industrial space that’s ready for entertaining!

Here’s how the kitchen looked before:

Plain melamine cupboards and an uninteresting light fixture made this kitchen feel dull. It was also in need of some more storage space and an area for casual dining. Most importantly, the appliances were old and in need of an upgrade.

My smarty-pants sister was able to find someone to rip out all of these existing cabinets and take all of the old appliances in one shot! And they even paid her! I’d say that’s some great negotiating skills.

And here’s how the kitchen looks now:

The starting point was a beautiful trio of Samsung appliances from The Brick.

This Samsung counter-depth refrigerator has french doors which mean you aren’t blocking the whole aisle when you’re looking for something in the fridge. My sister loves the bottom freezer that makes everything in the fridge portion at eye level and so easy to find. The fridge also has a power cooling and freezing feature that’s really nice if you need to bring the temperature down quickly.

The Samsung Built-In WaterWall™ Dishwasher with Third Rack has also proven to be a star in this kitchen. My BIL can’t stop raving about how quiet it is (which is certainly a benefit in a large loft space)! My sister & brother-in-law love the third rack; it’s best thing ever because it keeps little things like lids and measuring spoons from flying around.

Finally, this lovely Samsung 5.8 Cu. Ft. Slide-In Electric Flex Duo™ Range is the icing on the cake in this kitchen. My sister loves the double oven that allows them to use less power and bake multiple dishes at once even at different temperatures. They also love the overall look of this stove; it has the aesthetic of a gas stove despite it being electric!

To makeover the kitchen to suit these beautiful new Samsung appliances, we got some inexpensive cabinets in a sleek black finish which my sister & brother assembled themselves.

My sister and I installed a charcoal coloured Stikwood feature wall which I’ll share more about in a future blog post.

They hired by handy hubby to install all of the cabinetry, create the custom butcher block island with mitered waterfall edges, install the tile, and install new light fixtures.

He had the fabulous idea to install raw pipe on the ceiling to cover the electrical wiring, and I love how it adds even more of an industrial feel to this space.

A handmade industrial light fixture from Etsy gives this space some quirk and style.

Look how the kitchen glows when all the Edison bulbs are on:

The oversized island is a fantastic spot for meal prep and for casual dining.

We spray painted some stools my sister had with some gold coloured spray paint to tie into the modern brass handles my sister & brother-in-law installed.

My sister also found this cute little vintage cart that she spray painted in gold & royal blue to use as a coffee cart in their new kitchen.

I love how it adds a shot of bold colour into this otherwise monochromatic space.

I adore how modern and dramatic my sister and brother-in-law’s new kitchen is with it’s black, white and brass palette. They have an extra wall of storage, plus a large, gorgeous island with even more storage and entertaining space.

Most importantly? The function of this kitchen has grown leaps and bounds because of their new Samsung appliances from The BrickThe fridge makes storing and finding food items so much easier, the dishwasher is quiet and works so well (even with sawdust-covered dishes through this renovation!) and the stove is the perfect appliance for dinner for two or a dinner party with its two ovens.

We’re definitely going to make use of this gorgeous new kitchen and new appliances by hosting a kitchen warming party here soon!
