I realize it’s still August, however I wanted to get started on some Fall decor ideas so that when you’re ready to DIY & decorate for Autumn, I’ll have you covered!

This homemade pillow is SO easy to make. I started with some $1.25 plaid towels from Dollar Tree, added some simple embroidery, sewed them together and popped a pillow form inside. It’s so simple and inexpensive for a cute Fall decor accessory!

How to make a DIY embroidered Fall pillow from towels

Materials:

  • 2 Dollar Tree plaid kitchen towels
  • paper, computer & printer to print embroidery design
  • pencil
  • painter’s or scotch tape
  • embroidery floss
  • embroidery needle
  • sewing machine
  • needle & thread

Directions:

Click on the image above to download a high resolution version of this “grateful” design and print it onto an 8 1/2 x 11″ sheet of paper.

Scribble some pencil over the reverse side of the print, just over where the letters are.

Center the print right-side-up on one of the kitchen towels and tape it in place. Trace over the letters with a pen or firm pencil to transfer the letters onto the towel.

Trace over the transferred letters with a pencil if you’d like them to be darker.

Using embroidery floss and an embroidery needle, use a back stitch to embroider over the pattern you’ve traced. Here’s how to back stitch.

Pin the second kitchen towel to this first one, right sides together and matching all of the plaid stripes.

Sew the towels together around the perimeter, leaving a 12″ opening at the bottom of your pillow cover and a 1/2″ seam allowance.

Clip the corners of your pillow cover and then turn it right-side-out. Stuff a 10 x 20″ or a 12″ x 24″ pillow form inside your DIY pillow cover.

Use a blind stitch to close the opening of the pillow cover shut.

All done! You can wash your new Fall pillow by hand (or use the hand wash setting on your washing machine) and lay it flat to dry.

  1. I absolutely love your DIYs!!! You make Dollar Tree products look high end and something I’d want to display in my home! I love them all, but my very favorites are the grateful pillow & the baby pumpkins are so sweet, but I really love them all. Keep them coming & can’t wait to see Halloween!!!

  2. I really live this idea, thanks for sharing! I am going to do this with only one modification. I am going to attach a few buttons on the bottom so it acts kind of like a duvet cover. This way I can use the same pillow insert with other tea towel cases seasonally.
