When you're a mom in Alberta carrying such precious cargo when driving, making sure you're ready for the winter road conditions is extremely important. Today with the help of Esurance, I'm sharing with you a winter driving checklist so that will help you stay safe while traveling this season. While it's not a glamourous subject, I think it's extremely important to stay ready and prepared - especially in our climate!

    DIY Safe Winter Driving Checklist

Every year in Alberta it happens - the first snowfall hits, the road conditions are terrible, and the accidents happen. I've experienced a couple of car accidents during the cold winter months, and let me tell you - they are NOT fun. However, being prepared for anything can help give you peace of mind and help keep you safe during winter driving season.

Since becoming a mom, the need for safety while driving has become one of my greatest priorities. Not only do I need to watch out for my own safety, but now I have these three little beings that depend on me to help keep them safe in our vehicle too. Now, let's get prepared for winter driving in Alberta!

    Safe Winter Driving Checklist

Having this items in or on your vehicle this winter will help keep you safe and give you peace of mind as you drive this season.

    1. Winter Tires
Winter tires maintain elasticity at lower temperatures than other tires, therefore bending and gripping snow like the soles of a good winter boot.
    2. An Up-to-Date Insurance Policy
A car insurance policy protects you from the astronomical expenses and hassle that follow a car accident.  You can visit Esurance to get a free online auto insurance quote.
    3. Fully Charged Cell Phone
It's always a good idea to have a cell phone in your vehicle in case of an emergency, and having it fully charged is also important. You can keep an extra charging device in your car as well like a portable battery pack.
    4. Ice Scraper / Snow Brush
Being able to see properly out of your windows and windshield will help keep you safe on those winter roads.
    5. An Emergency Kit
Keeping a well-labeled bag with the following items inside your vehicle will help you & your family be ready for any sort of emergency:

      • non-perishable food & water
      • blanket
      • shovel (I love our collapsible shovel, pictured)
      • sand or kitty litter
      • tow rope
      • hatchet
      • flares
      • map & compass
      • jumper cables
      • flashlight
      • warm winter boots, snow pants & parka (wear them while driving, or bring them along in your vehicle)
      • first aid items

Very helpful! Each item of this checklist is very important for this season. For me, both the good shoes and the car tires are in first place when making such a checklist.

If you don't mind, do you have an idea how much it would cost to put together a good emergency toolkit? Thanks for your time
