Help Me Choose My DIY Studio Layout! (+ Get your own room designed from $69 with Modsy!)

February 5, 2018 By Christina Dennis 11 Comments

It’s always a great idea to have an objective, creative person take a look at your space to give you layout and furniture ideas. Even though I’ve been styling rooms for years now, I still get stumped and need some fresh ideas! The other day, I introduced you to my latest project: turning our guest house into a studio for my photography, videography and creative projects. Have a look at the mood board here, and then read on to help me choose the layout for the space and see how you can get your own room layout & furniture ideas from just $69 with Modsy (plus, use my exclusive coupon code DIYMOMMY20 to get 20% off)!

Modsy E-Design Services from $69

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by Modsy. As always, all of the opinions here are my own.

This little design project is quite unique because I’m turning a mini home into a creative studio. I don’t need a kitchen table in here like there was before, but I do need a desk to work at plus some blank wall areas to shoot YouTube videos and take photos for my blog & social media.

When Modsy approached me to work on a project with their help, I knew My DIY Studio would be the perfect collaboration. It’s such a small space and I needed some layout ideas!

Modsy‘s a personalized home design solution that uses 3D visualization technology to let you try on furniture before you buy. You can design and shop for your home with products from hundreds of partners! If you’re redesigning a space in your home, Modsy can help you take the guesswork out of buying furniture and where to put it. It’s also incredibly easy to use! There’s a step-by-step process as shown above that helps nail down your style and get all the details about your space.

You enter measurements and snap some quick photos of your room, and Modsy will do the rest.

There’s also a fun little style quiz that helps define your decorating style (mine was Farmhouse Chic… surprise, surprise!) so that your furniture selections match your aesthetic.

These are the most unprofessional photos ever, but just to show you how cool the process is here are some quick snaps I took of our guest house to send to Modsy:

With my measurements, these quick photos and my design style in mind, here are the designs & product choices Modsy sent back to me within a week. I was so impressed and inspired!

After Modsy sends you your designs, you can work on design revisions as needed, get a suggested shopping list of furniture and accessories featured in your designs, and even get a credit towards purchasing those items. What a great service!

As for the gorgeous designs I’ve received for My DIY Studio: I need your help deciding which layout is the best – Design #1 or Design #2? I love the first one for it’s more dramatic sofa and the perpendicular desk layout (I never thought of that!), but I also love the second one with the sofa facing the large window (which I also never thought of) to take advantage of the beautiful South light there. Please let me know what you think in the comments below!

I like the desk and kitchen area of #1 and the couch and rug of # 2, for the best of both designs.

Personally? why not go for #3 – an amalgam of both. Take what you love from both – the dramatic sofa and perpendicular table in #1, and the sofa facing the window in #2.

If I was going to choose between #1 and #2, it would depend on whether the kids would be spending time there. #1 is better for kids because white is harder to keep clean. #2 is good for guests – the lightness and sofa facing the feature brings a more sophisticated feel to the room.

I love the simplicity of design 2. I feel there is space to keep your energy and creativity flowing. For me, clutter even if I selected it begins to wear on me. This design feels clean and fresh.

Design #2 for me or like others suggested, a combination of the two.

I would take parts from 1 and 2 and make a 3. Both beautiful though! Happy choosing! 😊

I really love #2, the colors plus you said in your video you wanted to sit on a couch and look out. Modsy listened. Maybe add a round side table or a small round table and another chair in front of the window. I only saw the one chair. Very pretty design.
Good luck on your new adventure.
