Cleaning Your Fridge

Let’s start our journey to an organized fridge by addressing the very first and most important step: cleanliness. A spotless fridge isn’t just visually appealing; it’s essential for preserving freshness and preventing odors. Use a simple mixture of hot water and dish soap to cleanup grime from every crevice. Pay special attention to removable shelves and drawers, giving them a deep soak in a sink filled with soapy hot water to rid them of spills and drips. Don’t forget the doors and door shelves! Regular cleaning sessions will keep odors at bay and ensure your veggies and cheeses stay fresh and safe to eat.

Organize by Food Group

Now that our fridge sparkles, it’s time to conquer organization. Grouping similar items together is the key to a simple, organized fridge. Designate specific zones for vegetables, salads, cheeses, and juices. Optimize the top shelf for ready-to-eat snacks like yogurt and salad dressing as well as leftovers. (Consider using a lazy susan on the top shelf for easier access to items at the back of the shelf!)

Then, reserve the bottom shelves for dairy products and the lowest shelf for raw meat, preventing cross-contamination. Harness the power of bins and food storage containers to corral loose items like jars of ketchup and bottles of juice, minimizing clutter and maximizing space efficiency. The doors are the best spot for items that don’t need to be kept quite as cold like jams, jellies, sauces, and other condiments. Fruits, veggies and fresh herbs keep best in crisper drawers.

Utilize Storage Containers

Storage containers and bins can truly help keep a fridge organized. Transparent containers are a game-changer, because they offer visibility curbing the dreaded “out of sight, out of mind” syndrome. Label your bins for easy identification, ensuring even the busiest family members can locate their favorite snacks with ease. Consider containers that stack for an even better use of space.
