I think the coolest kinds of home decor crafts are the ones you can do WITH your kids and actually display in your home as a beautiful and quirky decor piece.  I love having personal, crafty pieces on our walls and our tables that make our house feel like kids live here and that give our home a fun story. This Spring bird’s nest cloche was one of those fun yet pretty crafts that both the girls and I enjoyed making – and I think it looks so sweet on our side table in the living room! For this craft, we made a DIY bird’s nest from things found in our yard, some DIY vintage butterfly picks and I used a glass server I had on hand as the cloche.

This cloche is also a great reason to get the kiddos outside in the “spring” weather and do a bit of a treasure hunt for bird’s nest goodies like sticks and dried grasses. (I say “spring” because we just had several inches of snow dump in our yard a couple of days ago.) We’re pretending the butterflies are out already, however, with this fun Spring cloche.

Here’s how we made our Spring bird’s nest cloche decor:

We went on a nature hunt in our yard and gathered thin, bendable branches and long dried grass.

I bunched them together and wrapped floral wire around them to make a long strand.

Then, I coiled the long tuft of branches and grass around to make a nest shape. I used floral wire to secure the coil on each side.

We placed the nest on a bed of moss (bought from a craft store) in the bottom of the server and placed some faux eggs inside.

Then, we made some simple decorative butterfly picks.

I found some vintage art from an antique butterfly book and printed some pages out in mirror image to make two sides to each butterfly.

Then, we cut out the butterflies, cut various lengths of floral wire, and glued the butterflies to the floral wire with a glue gun. Glue the backs of each butterfly on the other side.

We secured the butterfly picks into the sides of the nest, and decorated with some silk flowers.

After I placed the glass lid on our cloche, the girls picked some ribbon and I tied it around the lid’s handle with an antique key.

I placed the cloche on our living room side table beside my new Spring art (it’s a free download here), and now we’re just waiting for the real Spring weather to arrive!
