How to Paint a Dresser with DIY Chalk Style Paint (Video) | One Room Challenge Week 4

It’s week 4 of the One Room Challenge and not much has been done this week, to be honest! It’s been snowing here, and I’ve been having a hard time finding motivation to do much of anything (and it’s too wet and cold to put the power tools on the porch to cut trim). I’m thankful to live where and how we do, BUT I have to say that this SNOW at the end of April is really getting me down. Still, I thought I’d share with you what my dining room makeover is looking like this week plus show you how I made over my 15 year old dresser into a fresh, new-looking piece!

I bought this dresser with my mom when I was renting a home while going to college. My mom encouraged me to buy it – it was only $100 and made from solid wood. I’m so glad I bought it, because I still love its classic lines 15 years later.

With some DIY chalk style paint and a couple of days, I gave it a makeover so that it could act as a buffet in our new dining room.

Here’s how the dresser looked before:

Here’s how the dresser looks now:

With a simple paint job, some light distressing, and some inexpensive new knobs, I think this dresser now has the vintage farmhouse vibe I’m aiming for in this room.

Watch the video below for a tour of the room and to see how I painted my old dresser:

In other news, I just found out that my dining furniture from The Brick will come next Friday, and I received this gorgeous new rug for the space:

Originally, I wanted to layer this over a large sisal rug. However, the budget only permitted one rug so I went for the one with the WOW factor. Don’t you love the colour?

Now all I need to do is pray for sun, put down this coffee and start working on the trim & painting.

Stay tuned to my blog and YouTube channel to see if I can finish this room on time… here’s hoping!!

Make sure to follow along here over the next 6 weeks as I work on our new dining room, and visit the One Room Challenge blog to see all of the other makeovers as they progress!

  1. I have major rug envy!!! That rug is gorgeous, stunning color and beautiful pattern, its going to make your room. The perfect outdoor rug has been eluding me over this ORC, so way to go I am happy to see a beautiful room in someone’s room 🙂

    1. Thanks, Jennifer. Christina is so thrilled about the rug and we have to completely agree with you, the rig really does make the room. Thanks for stopping by.

  2. Agree. Great rug. I have stayed neutral (aka boring) since I fear styles will change and rugs are such an investment… but I love it.

A question. I want to paint my backroom vanity ( honey oak – yuk) to white. Do you recommend chalk paint or should I go more durable paint??
