How to Stay on Track When Buying Accessories for a Room (+ An ORC Update)

My fellow home decor lovers might agree with me on this: it’s really hard to stay on track when buying accessories for a room because they’re ALL SO PRETTY! I love little knick knacks, artwork, fabric, and linens, so when I have a specific project I’m working on (like our master bedroom makeover for the One Room Challenge), it’s sometimes tricky to narrow things down. Today, I’d love to share with you some of the accessories I’ve collected for our master bedroom so far, plus some tips to help you stay on track when you’re buying accessories for your own room.

I’m working towards a “Modern French Country” look for our master bedroom decor. French Country is a style I’ve always loved, and I think its naturally peaceful feel and vintage style really work for a bedroom design.

Here are some things I’ve collected so far for the room:

I love handmade items like this wooden sign, and I was also very pleased with all of the vintage-styled accessories I found at my local Brick store. Every store carries a variety of different accessories, so it’s fun to see what I can find!

I’ve loved collecting all the textiles for this space. I’m trying so hard to stick with neutral colours, but I might throw a pop of floral in with some DIY throw pillows. We’ll see!

So, how can I stay on track when buying accessories for my room? Here are some tips:

1. Have a mood board for your room
   A mood board is “an arrangement of images, materials, pieces of text, etc., intended to evoke or project a particular style or concept.” I always like to create mood boards in my photo editing program before I start a room design to help me understand the style, colours, and feel I’m aiming for in a room. You can see my Modern French Country bedroom mood board here. You can make these digitally, or gather magazine images, fabric swatches, paint chips and photos and make one the old fashioned way – with glue and scissors.
2. Set a budget
   Deciding on how much money you want to spend on your accessories will really help narrow down your options and keep you on track. It might also help narrow down the stores that you want to visit according to their price range.
3. Get a second opinion
   Shop with a friend, show them your mood board, and ask them what they think of the accessories you want to purchase. Having a fresh set of eyes look at your options can be very helpful when making decisions.
