This month, I introduced you to Our DIY Camper 2.0 – a new-to-us fifth wheel that I’m renovating for our family. Last week, I removed window cornices, wallpaper borders and MORE than I originally planned from the camper. This week, I started painting the camper and updated its adorable little kitchen!

Here’s how the kitchen camper area in our RV looked originally:

And here’s how the counter area looks NOW:

What a difference, right?! I’m mid-paint job on the cabinets, but I can’t wait to show you when them when they’re complete, too.

To make over this kitchen counter area on a budget, I first spray painted the faucet with Rustoleum’s Metallic spray paint in Pure Gold.

It went from this:

I didn’t remove the faucet, but instead taped carefully around it and created a DIY spray paint tent with a plastic bag & scrap wood.

You can see the whole tap painting process in this video:

Next, I installed a peel & stick tile backsplash. I did the same thing with our previous RV, and I was very happy with how it lasted and looked.

Here’s the peel & stick tile I used:

I love the marble hexagon pattern, and you can buy it from Amazon right here. I haven’t used this brand before, but it seems to have a very good adhesive. I did have some troubles with it because I started applying it to the wall on the bottom left instead of the top left (and had the tile facing the wrong way), but I was able to make it look good in the end.

To update the laminate countertop, I wrapped it in a large roll of marble patterned contact paper. I used this same product on my previous camper renovation, and was pleased with how it lasted and looked. You can even remove this later, so it’s a great way to update something on a budget! The new textures and light, bright colours make such a difference in this area, and I can’t wait to show you the rest!

  1. Oh wow! You are cruising along! The kitchen looks awesome! If you do decide to trim the edge of the contact paper off and paint the edge of the counter, what about painting it gold instead of white? My only concern is the raw edge of the contact paper might lift over time, but I guess you could get your butcher block then;)
Happy camping! Banff and Jasper opening soon! Can’t wait! The mountains are calling:)

  2. Love it!! Were from alberta as well and want to Reno our trailer. I’m concerned that the peel and stick wont last our horrible winters and will peel off. Any recommendations

    Thanks

  3. Looks so great! I’m in Saskatoon, looking to update our new popup trailer and am wondering how the stick on vinyl tile flooring held up through the cold winters. We’re thinking floating plank vinyl so it has more space to expand and contract. Look forward to hearing your experience! Thank you

  4. How is the peel and stick counter holding up to water? I’m a messy dishwasher. Our countertop is not vinyl, it has some kind of spray coating with a bumpy texture. I could probably paint it, but can’t cover it and really don’t want to try removing it. Looks like a kind of epoxy.

    1. They haven’t had an issue. I would suggest wiping it down with a dry towel after you do the dishes just so you have puddles of water left on it 🙂
