Make a No Sew Ruffled Dropcloth Christmas Tree Skirt

This has been a really busy week for me as I prepare for the Homes for the Holidays tour in Edmonton. Five homes in the city will be decorated for Christmas, and all of the money raised supports the Junior League of Edmonton. I have the honour to decorate one of the homes, and it's been such a fun experience! My mom, my sister and I worked for several hours yesterday to style the house for Christmas, and I'll be back today to put the finishing touches on the space before the tour is on this weekend. One of the things I made for this shabby chic inspired Christmas home was a simple and pretty ruffled Christmas tree skirt out of a painter's drop cloth - no sewing required. This was so easy and inexpensive to make, and I thought I needed to share the tutorial with you all here!

Isn't this corner of the home I got to decorate so lovely? If you are local to Edmonton, make sure to come on the tour this weekend so that you can see the rest!

To make this ruffled tree skirt, all you need is some cotton painter's dropcloth, some scissors and a glue gun.

First, cut a large circle out of the dropcloth fabric. I tie a string to a pencil, move the pencil to where I want, and create a perfect circle that way. My circle is about  2 ½ feet wide, but you could make your skirt any size you wish.

Then, fold the cirlce into quarters and cut a small cirlce out of the top point as shown above. You can also cut along one of the folds on the sides to create an opening on the skirt.

Next, tear some strips of dropcloth for the ruffle. I like how dropcloth frays, so tearing strips is a fun way to add texture to this project. I also tore strips for my dropcloth Christmas wreath project. My strips are about 3" wide.

Heat up your gluegun, and then pinch and pleat your stips and glue them down to the outer edge of your dropcloth circle as shown above. You could use a measuring tape and mark out the pleats evenly, but I preferred to eyeball the pleats for this project and not make them so perfect. I think this adds to the vintage, shabby chic quality of this tree skirt.

Once you've glued down the ruffle all around the outer edge of your skirt, you're done! You could glue some ribbon strips along the opening to act as ties for the skirt, but I've left my opening free for now.

This is such a simple and pretty tree skirt that's easy on the budget and on the eyes.

I'm so in love with how it looks under my shabby chic tree I've used here! If you're local to Edmonton, I really hope you'll come see how I've decorated this whole home for Christmas. It's definitely gotten me into the Christmas spirit!
