I love themed gifts, so pairing these handmade mittens with hand care products is so fun and practical to give as a gift this Christmas. You might know that Rocky Mountain Soap Co is my favourite skin care company (they’re all natural ingredients are heavenly on my sensitive, problem skin), so I think they’re goodies would be a great gift for anyone.

After I made my mittens, I stuffed a few Rocky products inside – like this Hand Butter and this Cuticle Butter – tied a bow around the tops of the mittens, and called it a day. Voila! The perfect gift for almost anyone.

First of all, click right here or on the image below to download your mitten pattern. This is a woman’s medium mitten that I traced using one of my own mittens, so if you need a different size simply find a mitten you already have and trace it to create your own custom pattern.

First, turn your thrifted sweater inside out, and place your mitten pattern on it with the bottom of the pattern lined up with the bottom ribbing of the sweater. Make sure any patterns on your sweater are where you want them to be on the mitten, and trace around the pattern with a permanent marker.

Next, pin both sides of your sweater together, and sew through both layers with a sewing machine. You could also hand stitch your mittens, but I find a sewing machine to make a more durable mitten. Sewing the mittens before you cut them out of the sweater helps keep all of the yarn work together before you cut it.

After you sew all the way around your mitten, cut it out of your sweater leaving a 1/4″ seam allowance.

Using your machine’s zig-zag setting, zig-zag around the entire mitten so that the seam is strengthened and looks more finished.

To make the next mitten in the pair, use the same mitten pattern but flip it horizontally so that you make a mirror image of the first mitten. Follow the same steps above to make your second mitten.
