I’m a tad bit obsessed with anything from Restoration Hardware. I’m a big fan of the “vintage industrial” look (mixed in with all sorts of random decor looks that I love), and all of the furniture and art from RH is definitely the epitome of this style. Something that I’ve wanted to do for a long time is make some Restoration Hardware inspired vintage blueprint artwork for my wall from our house plan. Our DIY House was a huge labour of love (well, it still is), and I thought it would be special to display the plan that started it all in a fun and chic way. With a bit of Photoshopping, I made it happen and I love my new art!

Here’s how I made my vintage blueprint art from my house plan in Photoshop (I’m using CS3):

First, I opened up the PDF of our house plan in Photoshop and chose a page from it that I wanted to use. I loved the look of the elevations page. At this point, you can erase or cut out anything on the image that you don’t want displayed (I eventually took out the logo on the bottom right hand corner of mine). You can also crop your page to the desired size and resolution you’d like. I made mine a 10′ x 8′ with 300DPI.

I clicked on the Image menu, then Adjustments > Invert. The black lines become white lines and my background is now black.

I bought a few great textured backgrounds from my new favourite graphics shop, Creative Market, and opened the black one up in Photoshop (you can buy this texture pack here).

Then, I ensured the vintage textured background was the same size and resolution as my blueprint and I brought it into my blueprint artwork as a bottom layer. I then changed the opacity of the blueprint art layer to 50% so that my texture would show through and so that the white lines faded a little.

That’s it! So far, I’ve printed my DIY vintage industrial blueprint art at home and framed it, but I think I might have a larger version printed up and decoupage it to a canvas for something more substantial on my wall.

  1. I. LOVE. This! I really might have to get you to make me one of these someday!

Love your Etsy shop too, BTW.

  2. Christina this is a great idea. One could even make it for their new home they just build. It would make very personal real estate closing gift for a client. It would be great conversation piece at parties and little blue print how to get around the house.

  3. Do you still have an Etsy Shop? I am interested in getting one of these made. I tried to click on the link to your shop but it did not work. Let me know, I would love one of these!

  4. I would love to have our new house done! Do you provide this service or know someone who does?
    Thanks so much!
