Mood Board: Modern French Country Patio

Patio season is short here in Alberta, so we really need to take advantage of every sunshiny minute! Even though we have a lot of other projects going on this Spring (like our little camper renovation and my parents’ house build), we wanted to finally make a patio behind our home. We have a walk-out basement that leads out to our back yard, and it’s been a muddy mess for almost 4 years now. With a stack of reclaimed patio tiles that my husband salvaged from a job site, some inexpensive pea gravel, and some beautiful patio furniture from The Brick, we’re going to transform this bare spot into a little modern French country patio oasis to enjoy this summer.

Here’s what the site looks like now:

As you can see, we haven’t done anything to it. Heck, we still need to take the window stickers off of the basement window here and wire in the outdoor lights.

This spot is North-facing, so it’s nice and cool and shady during the day. It also gets a gorgeous, warm glowing sun in the evening as the sun is setting in the West. I thought it would be a great location for dining al fresco and setting up my laptop in the summer so that I can work outside.

When I saw this patio set at one of my recent pit stops at The Brick, I instantly knew it would be perfect for our new back patio. It’s comfy enough to lounge on, but the dining-height table would make a great place to eat and set up a little office. The Creston Patio Set also features a cushion storage box which I thought was a genius addition.

The grey cushions and warm brown faux wicker of this set have a bit of a modern french country vibe to them, and as you might know that’s one of my favourite decor styles! I searched the internet for French country patio and courtyard ideas and saw that many featured pea gravel floors which the hubby and I thought would be a nice, inexpensive way to create our new patio. We also need to build a little retaining wall on the East side to reign in the big dirt hill, so building that out of some rustic grey stone will also add to the French vibe of the space.

Here’s my mood board for our Modern French Country Patio:

Modern French Country Patio Mood Board

  1. Black Offset Patio Umbrella from The Brick
  2. Creston 6 Piece Patio Set from The Brick
  3. Lantern Style Exterior Light
  4. Artificial Lavender
  5. French Style Bucket
  6. Blue Bird Accent Pillow from The Brick
  7. Round Jute Placemat
  8. Succulents in Parisian Pots
  9. Antique Lavender Hydrangea
  10. Metal Bird Cages

I think this look is elegant, yet rustic. To me, the colour palette of blues, purples, blacks and greys is very serene and relaxing – perfect for enjoying a summer’s day outside!

  1. What color of paint did you use on your house? It’s a beautiful Gray, I’m horrible at picking out colors I know what I like but cannot ever decide. Thank You, Kim…

    1. Hello Kim,
Christina actually used a vinyl siding from Kaycan called “Harvard Slate”. 🙂

  2. I love this mood board! I need to spruce up my outdoor living area too and have been looking at cantilevered sun umbrellas. Thanks for linking to the one in your board because I found that it comes in other colours too. Turquoise!

  3. I love that patio furniture because of just the reason you mentioned – the height. So many of the lounge style ones have coffee tables, but the fact that this one can either be a casual table, a dining table or even a desk is fantastic. Yay for multi-function furniture!

    1. Hey Larissa,
Thanks for stopping by and yes Christina completely agrees with you. Mult-function is where it’s at!

  4. Loved all that you shared here. I love the furniture and the color ideas of the patio set. I agree that you need to build little retaining wall for the patio. I simply love it!
