It's that time again - time for to give you a glimpse into Our DIY House for a yearly home tour! Please come in, grab yourself a cup of coffee and let me show you around. What kind of coffee would you like? A vanilla latte? My specialty! I've teamed up with some blogging friends who are also opening their homes up to you today. Scroll down to the bottom of this post to click on over to some more inspiring home tours.
In case you are new here, here’s a quick background on Our DIY House: We started building our home by ourselves in 2012 (we lived in an 800 square foot garage on our property previously). We moved in July 2013 and have been puttering around since then and working on the finishing details. You can see our basic floor plan here. We love our new home, but it’s definitely been a challenge to finish it on a budget and while we are raising 3 kids and while Hubby has his contracting business. Welcome to our work-in-progress!
It often feels like things are moving SO slowly as we work on our home, but I think that's how most people feel with home building and renovations! When I look at last year's home tour, I'm reminded of how far we've come. Plus, we have three little girls that need our devotion and they are only babies once. Between them and our home finishing, we are kept busy!
Over the last couple of weeks, my hubby has been working on beefing up our porch posts. I LOVE how they look so far! What a difference between this profile and the unfinished look. I'm going to keep painting over the next week or two and finishing up the front flower beds, and then I'm going to share those with you in a separate post. It's coming along, and the warm weather has inspired us to work on the exterior of Our DIY House and the yard.
I still have this bright teal door and "Hello" decal, and this wreath I made last Fall has found a permanent home on our front door. I like the contrast of these bright pink & white flower pots that I found at Home Depot.
Upon entering our home you'll see a wee cabinet and map art (here's the free download) to the left.
To the right of the entry is our Ikea shoe cabinet and a mirror I found at Lowe's. These are the last of our lilacs from the Spring. Yummm!
Directly in front of the door is our craftsman styled staircase that my parents and I finished ourselves.
The hall by the stairs is where our front closet is.
To the left of the entry is our formal sitting room. I've finally finished decorating it, and these are the first photos of this room that I'm sharing with you today! It's really quite feminine, but I've added in bits of industrial elements with the metal coffee table (from our porch!), the DIY faux cowhide rug and the light fixture.
This settee is probably my favourite piece in our home, and it was a gift when Baby B was born last year. I just love it!
I made a tailored skirt for our keyboard stand so that it looks more at-home in this room, and I'll share the DIY for that in a later post.
These chairs are also very special - they were a vintage find that my mom reupholstered.
I finally made the DIY floral pillow covers last week. They're so vintage femme!
To the right of our entry is our family room. Now, normally it's littered with toys and books, but here it is all tidied up just for you! All of the furniture is older from our little house, but I still like it all (especially when it's spruced up with throw pillows).
I love to change out the mantel and coffee table decor seasonally. The coffee table recently got a mini makeover - it's the perfect piece to stuff all of our kids' books and my magazines inside!
Across from our fireplace is our TV, and I've spruced it up with a TV gallery wall.
My office / craft room is in a corner between our living room and kitchen and I'm still so happy with its location. I can keep the doors open when I need to do a little work and play with the kids at the same time, or close it when I need to. It's a LOT messier right now than it is in this photo! Oh boy. I sense and craft room organization blog post in my near future!
Our kitchen is next, and it's still my favourite room in our home. You can read more about our new marble backsplash here, and read about the drapes here.
Read more about this Spring / Summer table setting here.
Our recent backsplash installation forced me to shine up all of the chrome and stainless steel in here, which is a BIG job! I think it's totally worth it, though.
Hiding behind a pocket door next to our kitchen is our laundry room. You can read about our recent laundry room makeover here.
The pegboard wall has been great. You can read about that here too.
Upstairs, Little C's room is in the first corner. It's BOLD and bright and well loved!
The kids' bathroom is next, and it's THISCLOSE to complete. I just have some trim to do, and then I can show you the rest! Our DIY hook wall has been great for towels and laundry hampers.
Little A's room is still my favourite bedroom. She now has a white iron toddler bed in place of the crib, but the rest is the same.
The wall colour just gets me every time!
Baby B's room is in the 3rd corner of the house. It's boho themed in soft greys, pinks and yellows.
Everyone loves to cuddle and rock in this little corner of her room.
Finally our master suite is in the last corner of our home. It still looks like this, and we are still working on our ensuite bathroom. We're hoping to finish it... this year? It's one of those things that's at the bottom of our long to-do list. One day soon, I hope!
I hope you've enjoyed touring Our DIY House this year. Thank you so much for coming and having a peek!
Now let's grab our coffees and a cookie and head on over to my blogging friends' homes for some more tours. I can't wait to see some more beautiful homes and get inspired! #hometourhop
Sara @ Shabby Grace Blog

Thanks, Sara! We love our home's layout - it's so family friendly!
Emily, Our house now a home
Wow, your home is stunning! I mean, seriously, gorgeous! Those floor's, the pops of color, I adore all of your beautiful furniture. The colors are great. I love the pops of bright! It is a good thing this is not a real, in person home tour. I feel like you would have to kick me out because I would be wanting to see every single detail. Thank you so much for taking part in the home tour hop!
Thanks so much, Emily!
Your home is absolutely stunning!! First off, your lighting is AMAZING! I'm a huge lover of unique light fixtures! It really changes a space! Your entire home is beautiful and I really look forward to the tailored skirt tutorial for your keyboard. I teach piano lessons and have a keyboard and would to make it look more "homey." Thanks for inspiring me and thanks for being a part of this tour with me!
Thanks, Ruthie! I'm so glad you noticed our lighting because I spent hours upon hours choosing it! It was stressful. 🙂 I'm going to post the tailored keyboard stand skirt tutorial this week.
Your home is absolutely gorgeous! To know that y'all are doing it all yourselves makes it even more special! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much, Iris!
Meg @ Green With Decor
Love your house! Those chairs in your front entryway are awesome! You have the coolest light fixtures throughout your home. And I love the IKEA shoe rack - I've been thinking about getting one.
Thanks, Meg! We love the Ikea shoe cupboard - it works like a charm.
What a lovely home you have, Christina! I love the gray walls and white accents in the master bedroom. So pretty.
Thanks so much!
Gilly @ Colour Saturated Life
I love your home, especially the colour palette you have chosen!
Thank you, Gilly! I really am in love with calming teals, aquas and greys. Thanks for popping by!
Stephanie @ Casa Watkins
WOW!!! I am in love with your kitchen and laundry room. Your home is very cohesive. I love how all the rooms reflect a similar color scheme and vibe. Great job making your DIY home. 🙂
Thanks, Stephanie! I'm definitely addicted to turquoise and grey. 🙂
You have a very beautiful home! I love it all but your laundry room had me at peg board. I need to incorporate that into my house to help with organization!
Thanks, Megan! I LOVE our laundry room. We recently finished it, and it has made "loads" of difference. Haha! 😉
Beautiful home tour, Christina! I especially love those porch columns! They definitely look loads better now. =D
Thanks, Sara! I totally agree. They make such a huge difference. Now to finish painting everything on the porch... UGH!
Your home is gorgeous. I love all of the colors and textures you use. You have quite the eye for design and styling. Can't wait to see more. 🙂
Thank you, Kathy!
Great tour!! Love seeing all the progress, and I can relate on the whole slow-moving thing when you are finishing the home yourselves. Nice to know we aren't alone in this 🙂
Thanks so much, Gemma! IT can be a little painful, hey? But it's fun to look back and see the changes and realize how much thought and work you've put into everything over time.
Oh my goodness! Your house is perfect! I'm sure it doesn't look like this all the time because well, you have a family! But I could seriously live in there. You have all of my favorite color combos! Thanks for sharing =)
Absolutely gorgeous every single square inch of it!
Firstly, what a beautiful home! You've made some wonderful choices. Do you mind if I ask what paint colours did you use in your daughter A's bedroom. I'm decorating my three year olds' room and I'm finding it difficult to find the right soft turquoise. Thanks!
Thanks so much, Lindsay! All of our paint colours are here: http://thediymommy.com/choosing-the-paint-how-to-pick-paint-colours-for-an-entire-house-our-diy-house/
Your home is amazing! I love your kitchen! I'm curious what the countertops are made of? You are so very talented!
Sara @ twelveonmain.com
Thanks, Sara! Our countertops are butcher block that I whitewashed and then sealed. We love them!
Absolutely beautiful home! I wish you lived closer so I could come see it in person!
Thanks, Virginia. It would be awesome if we were neighbors. Think of all the crafty parties we would have! 🙂
Love the home! What trim did you guys use? I love the farmhouse and clean line style. That's exactly what I'm looking for! Thanks, in advance for your response! 🙂
Thanks! I've written a post about our trim here: http://thediymommy.com/diy-simple-craftsman-trim-our-diy-house/
You have designed a beautiful home and I really love your style. May I ask what teal color you painted on the exterior of your front door?
Oh my goodness! I need to start following your blog! You are so talented and I love all those pictures! Where do I begin?
Where did you get that big picture of roses over your bed?
Do you give instructions on how to do the laundry room?
(I don't want to overwhelm...)
Thank you so much, Jenene! That large photo is from Ikea, and I write about my laundry room here: http://thediymommy.com/vintage-red-aqua-small-laundry-room-design-ideas-video/
Just curious...what is the odd gap along the ceiling above all the kitchen cabinets? It looks like maybe crown is waiting to be put up but doesn't look like space was left to actually to add any.
Thank you for your blog! I couldn't figure out HOW to assemble the fireplace mantle we are building and then saw your side view shot of yours in the process. Saved the day for me 🙂
Thanks so much for visiting! We're putting a filler piece above the cabinets and we just haven't got to it yet. 🙁 I hope we can finish it before Christmas this year!
Yea nice home and all, but honestly I think its a little much. Your living room is too crowded with unnessasary decorations.....sorry. And I think your just trying to show off.
Where did you buy the ceiling fans in your kitchen and master bedroom?
We bought them from Direct Buy and they are Kichler brand.
WOW! Your house is amazing.
I am in awe of it.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much, Meena!
The house is gorgeous! I love the design, the colors... the arrangements! Everything is perfect! Me and my husband have bought a house and we need to start with the renovations and I want to create a great atmosphere there! For the first time I will move to a house of my own and I want to decorate it in the way I want to! I want to make the house perfect for the time when we gonna move there! Thanks for sharing! Great inspiration!
Just wanted to say thanks for the insperation. I enjoyed your presentation in Lloydminster at the beginning of April. I love my new red geometric design curtains with grommets and I covered an old gel mat with a pretty brown and turquoise geometric print. I used the looking glass spray paint on an old milk bottle and think I may do a few more since I have a small collection. Haven't decided yet if I will go next step to make it look like mercury glass. After talking to you about the trials of reno's I took a chance and used "Plaster Paint" from "Real Deals" and think I'm going to like it. Thanks again!
I'm so glad you enjoyed the presentation, Cindy! Thanks so much for watching it and for reading my blog. That's so wonderful that you made some grommet curtains and the mat and mirror painted milk bottle sound beautiful too!
We like your fireplace surround. Looks like you used a slate multicolored stacking stone. Do you know the vendor/mfg/source or name of the stacking stone you used?
