It’s here! It’s the final reveal day for Little A’s rich and magical boho inspired girls bedroom makeover for the one room challenge. Come take a photo and video tour of the completed space and see how we transformed my daughter’s room on a budget… just in time for her 7th birthday!

In case you’ve never heard of it, the One Room Challenge is a challenge hosted by Calling It Home where several interior designers and dozens of guest participants (usually home decor bloggers like myself) makeover one room in their home over the course of 6 weeks. I’ve done 4 previous ORCs before, so this one will be my 5th!

Check out all of the previous makeover’s I’ve done for this challenge right here.

This season, I’m making over my middle daughter’s bedroom into a Rich and Magical Girl’s Bedroom. You can see my mood board & design plans right here.

I managed to complete this makeover within the 6 week timeframe and before Little A’s makeover – hooray! You might catch a couple of little deficiencies when you look hard at the photos, but I’m not going to tell you what they are! (You may or may not find some painter’s tape holding something in place, haha!)

Here’s a look at what I did to this room each week. Click on the links to read more about each step:

Week 1: Mood Board & Design Plan

Week 2: Painting

Week 3: Window Seat Hack

Week 4: DIY Duvet Cover

Week 5: Upcycled Screen Headboard

Week 6: That’s today and it’s the big reveal day!

And here’s how Little A’s bedroom looks NOW:

Doesn’t it look so unique?! I’m thrilled with how this came together and how it doesn’t look like your typical girls’ room. I’m so happy that Little A wanted to try unique colours and upcycled elements in her room to create this budget-friendly, boho-inspired rich and magical bedroom design.

This deep teal feature wall is really my favourite. It’s a colour that A picked herself called  Atlantic Waves by Cloverdale, and we softened it up a little by making some gold foil star decals with my Cricut and placing them randomly on the wall. I love how the DIY upcycled vintage screen headboard turned out, and I found this unicorn head from Target online to add some whimsy. The glittery paper star banner is from Amazon, and the star lights are from Ikea. The nightstand is from The Brick, and I updated the handles with a little gold spray paint.

We found this shelf on the Walmart clearance shelf, and it was the perfect piece to hold all of A’s Shopkins!

Little A was thrilled with my handmade unicorn duvet cover (hooray!), and some velvet pillows from Target online and a handmade flippy sequin star pillow finished off the look of the bed. The rug was originally in our dining room downstairs, and I brought it up here because I thought it was perfect in this space!

I also really love how this simple window seat hack turned out on the north wall of A’s room. I took some Ikea Kallax shelving units, and these three fit perfectly across the wall. Some velvet floor pillows from Urban Outfitters created a simple but cozy window seat for my daughter to read and relax on.

I love the “You are better than unicorns and sparkles combined” wooden sign on these picture ledges I installed, and you can get 15% off your own William Rae Designs sign by using the code THEDIYMOMMY15 right here!

The gold curtain rod I used is from Home Depot, and the ruffled white curtains are here from Amazon.

My mom made over this beautiful vintage vanity when Little A was three, and I love how it looks on this side of the room. It really ties into the rest of the space with its gold handles.

I found this vintage mirror at our local antique shop, and it was one of the pieces that set this whole “magical” theme in motion.

Overall, I am very happy with how this room turned out. I love the unique colour scheme and all of the budget-friendly DIY touches we were able to include.

Most importantly? My girl is THRILLED with her room! I love that we were able to work together to create something that was uniquely hers.

  1. That room is amazing, I’m amazed how much you did with so little and how creatively you did it! My own 7 year old saw it and now is convinced I can pull off a similar trick, she is totally in love. I know my limits though, these room makeovers mostly make me realize I need to find a stylist I can pay to do this sort of thing for me.

  2. Your room makeover is amazing! I love all the details and special pillows, shelves, lights and more that you used! My daughter was peeking over my shoulder and had me pin it for inspiration for her room!
Saw the pin on the ultimate pinterest party!

  3. Hello! I love this little girl room! I am doing a little window bench seat like yours (thanks to the IKEA Kallax)! Just a quick question: the 4×1 kallax is 57 7/8” long and the pillows from urban outfitters you linked to are 18” each. Seems that the pillows won’t cover about 3” of the kallax. It doesn’t look like that from your pictures though. Is that the case? Maybe something has changed in the past few years with one of the products. I’ve been having trouble finding pillows that are a bit bigger but don’t break the bank!
