Sew an Elsa Inspired Frozen Snow Princess Dress

Published: Sep 10, 2014 · Modified: Oct 22, 2014 by Christina Dennis · This post may contain affiliate links · This blog generates income via ads · 36 Comments

The girls and I have already been discussing what our Halloween costumes will be this year. Believe me, I've tried and tried and TRIED to steer them towards something unique like purple unicorns or construction worker girls. Regardless, they were determined and oh-so-passionate about dressing up as what about 90% of all the other girls will be dressed up as this year - Elsa and Anna from the movie Frozen. I finally gave in.

I decided to Let it Go. Ha.

Free Pattern and Tutorial for Frozen Elsa and Anna Dresses

I really wanted to try my hand at sewing some Frozen inspired princess dresses, and when OnlineFabricStore.net told me they would send me some of their gorgeous fabric for this project, I was so excited! OnlineFabricStore.net is a fabric store I recently discovered on Instagram, and boy do they ever have a fabulous selection of fabric. They ship to Canada, and their selection is superb. I received my fabric in record speed!

Free Pattern and Tutorial for Frozen Elsa and Anna Dresses

I designed two cute snow princess dresses for Little C and Little A that are easy to sew and easy to slip on and off. I think both of these qualities are SO important when you have multiple kids in the house and need quick projects and costumes that kids don't have to ask for help to get in and out of.

Free Pattern and Tutorial for Frozen Elsa and Anna Dresses

Today I'll share with you the free pattern and tutorial for the snow princess dress costume inspired by Elsa from Frozen. Come back on Friday for the tutorial on the Anna inspired dress.

Elsa Inspired Frozen Snow Princess Dress Costume

    Materials:

    • ½ yard turquoise sequin fabric
    • ½ yard turquoise stretch velvet
    • 1 yard aqua satin
    • 1 yard turquoise mirror organza
    • 1 yard turquoise sparkle organza
    • ½ yard white sparkle organza
    • sewing machine, serger, thread
    • ¼" white elastic

    Directions:

This pattern and tutorial will make a child's costume dress that will fit a most 2 - 6 year olds. You can adjust the skirt length, the elastic at the waist, and the elastic at the neckline to make the dress smaller or larger. It's a nice, adjustable, easy pattern!

Cut the bottom front and bottom back bodice out of the stretch velvet fabric, cut the bottom front bodice out of the sequin fabric, cut the top front and back bodices out of the white sparkle organza, and cut the sleeve out of the white sparkle organza. We'll cut out the skirt and cape pieces later.

DIY Frozen Elsa Dress Costume Tutorial and Free Pattern

Pin the sequin front bodice bottom to the velvet front bodice bottom and stay stitch them together about ¼" from the edge.

Pin and then stitch the upper front bodice to the lower front bodice, matching their centers and using a ½" seam allowance. I used a serger to finish this seam, but you could also use a zig zag stitch on a regular machine to finish. Use a nice, sharp needle when you're sewing chiffon so that it doesn't tear afterwards!

DIY Frozen Elsa Dress Costume Tutorial and Free Pattern

To make the attached cape, finish around the two short sizes and one long side of the entire yard of sparkle turquoise organza. I used a serger, small rolled hem would also work. I rounded the bottom two corners with my serger. Then, gather the top long edge by sewing a running stitch on the machine, and pulling the threads.

DIY Frozen Elsa Dress Costume Tutorial and Free Pattern

Pin the two ends of the cape to the top edge of the bodice bottom back piece. The cape's wrong side should be against the bodice's right side. Adjust the gather of the cape so that it's the same width as the bodice top edge. Sew them together.

DIY Frozen Elsa Dress Costume Tutorial and Free Pattern

Sew the bodice top back piece to the bodice bottom piece (right sides together with the cape sandwiched in the middle) using a ½" seam. Finish the edge with a serger or zig zag stitch.

Sew the front and back bodices together at the sides using a ½" seam allowance.

To make the skirt, measure your child from their waist to where you want the skirt to fall (my 5 year old measured about 27" inches from waist to floor, and my 2 year old measured about 21"). Cut a the aqua satin so that it is the length you need, and then cut it in half on the fold of the fabric so that you have a front and back skirt piece. Do the same for the mirror organza fabric.

Sew each skirt together at the side seams (finish with a serger or zig zag stitch), and then sew the two skirts together at the top edges with the organza layer on top of the satin layer. Sew a long running stitch around the top of the layered skirt, and then pull it to gather the skirt as shown.

    Elsa-from-Frozen-inspired-Snow-Princess-Dress-2

Pin the skirt to the bodice, right sides together, and adjust the gathers to fit. Sew the skirt to the bodice using a ½" seam allowance and seam finishing with a serger or zig zag.

You can finish the bottom edges of the skirt with a narrow rolled hem or a serger like I did.

DIY Frozen Elsa Dress Costume Tutorial and Free Pattern

Fold the sleeves in half lengthwise, and sew them together at the under arm seam.

DIY Frozen Elsa Dress Costume Tutorial and Free Pattern

Pin and sew the sleeves to the bodice as shown above, right sides together, using a serger or a regular machine with a zig zag stitch to finish the seam. The sleeve edges can be finished with a narrow rolled hem or serger.

DIY Frozen Elsa Dress Costume Tutorial and Free Pattern

Create a casing along the top of the sleeves and bodice by serging or zig-zagging the top edge to finish it, and then turning the top edge over about ⅝" and sewing it down. Thread a piece of elastic through this casing that's about 15" long to form the neck opening.

DIY Frozen Elsa Dress Costume Tutorial and Free Pattern

Finally, cut a piece of elastic that's about 10" long (or about ½ of your child's waist circumference), and stitch it to the back half of the skirt seam. This creates a nice snug fitting waist, but allows the dress to still be taken off and on easily.

You're finished! Try the dress on your little snow princess and Let It Go!

Thanks a bunch, Kendra! Yes, the girls love long swirly dresses, so I had to make them with skirts like that. 🙂

I am wondering what sizes this pattern covers? I have an Elsa, and making the Anna dress today! My girls need more dress up stuff since the store bought always falls apart, unfortunately.

I’m so excited to try this dress! Thank you for the tutorial!! One question, I don’t have a stretch velvet for the bodice, if I use a woven, will it work out?
