I’ve been telling my friends lately that I used to feel so proud of myself a couple of months ago when I thought I had mothering three kids all figured out. Things have changed. Baby B is now crawling very, very quickly in every direction AND she’s pulling up and balancing and wiggling and rocking and… and… and… It’s exciting to watch and it’s absolutely exhausting! I had the idea to sew some special baby jeans for Baby B that would cushion her little knees as she crawled. These DIY pants turned out really cute looking and they work well! I used some extra upholstery leather that I had as knee patches. Here’s how I made these adorable little baby crawler jeans with leather knee patches and how you can make a pair for your own sweet crawler.

Materials:

  • a pair of jeans or pants made of woven material that fit your baby now
  • lightweight denim fabric
  • upholstery leather scraps (I had some leftover from my leather diaper bag and diaper clutch project)
  • sewing machine, thread, pins, safety pins
  • 1 inch wide elastic
  • scissors
  • pen + kraft paper or scrap paper for drawing the pattern onto
  • temporary spray adhesive

Directions:

Fold the baby pants you’re using as a pattern in half lengthwise as shown. Spread them out so that all of the seams are flat and trace around them, remembering to stretch out the elastic waistband as much as you can.

Straighten out the side seams of your drafted pattern with a hard ruler and add 1 1/2 inch to the waist, 1 inch to the bottom hem and 1/2 inch seam allowance to the two sides. Repeat by flipping the pants to the backside and making another pattern.

Your resulting pattern will look something like the above with a front and back of similar shapes.

Pin your pattern to (pre-washed) denim and cut out two of each piece. (As you can see, I’m a little lazy with my pattern drafting and I add on my hems after I make the pattern.)

Cut out some knee patches out of leather scraps that are about 3″ in diameter. I used a heart cookie cutter to make sweet little heart shaped patches!

Adhere the patches to the front jean pieces in about the center of the pieces. You might have to study another pair of your baby’s pants to see where the knee hits before you place the patches.

Sew the patches onto the jeans by zig-zagging with the sewing machine around the shapes.

Sew one front to one back piece together at the side seam using a 1/2″ seam allowance. Top-stitch if desired. Repeat with the other front and back pieces.

Pin the two sides together at the crotch of the pants, matching the center seam. Sew.

If you want, you can topstitch around the crotch seam as I did, and you can even make a faux fly by stitching a fly shape as above. I love the detail this adds to these simple pants!

Fold the top of the jeans over 1/2″ and press. Fold them over another 1″ and press again. Sew 1/8″ close to the folded edge to create a casing for the elastic. Leave an opening of 2″.

Press the leg openings over 1/2″ and then another 1/2″. Sew about 1/8″ from the fold to create hems.

Measure your baby’s waist and cut the elastic to the same size. Thread it through the waist casing of the jeans using a safety pin and a pin. Sew the elastic together and then stitch the hole shut.

If you want to, you can sew a line through the middle of the elastic as shown by stretch the elastic as you go. This helps the elastic from shifting and twisting in the pants.
