Sew a 15 Minute Reusable Snack Bag

Several years ago I set out to design a very simple reusable snack bag for things like sandwiches and crackers. I came up with an easy design that took me only 15 minutes to sew! These little DIY reusable snack bags are cute and they’re so functional for litterless back-to-school snacks and lunches.Continue reading

Make a Thankful Tree: A Thankgiving Kid’s Craft – Tip Tuesday

Thanksgiving Day is next Monday (for us Canadians), and it’s one of my favourite holidays.

It’s not just for the pumpkin pie and turkey (which I am SO looking forward to this year as it will be the first extended family dinner that I’ve ever hosted in our new house)!

I love Thanksgiving because it forces me to pause, reflect, and remember the blessings we’ve been given.

Make a Faux Cowhide Rug for Under $50

I seriously used to DESPISE cowhide rugs, but somehow they slowly knocked at my brain until I started liking them just a little bit. Then, I kept seeing them in home decor spaces that I loved, and my like for them grew into love. Now, I simply couldn’t wait to have one for our sitting room that I’m working on! I don’t know – there’s just something about throwing in a modern & unexpected element into a room that I just think is so very fun. A cowhide rug in a formal sitting room says “this room isn’t as serious as it looks“!

As much as I would have loved to run to the store and buy a real cowhide rug, our “dual-self-employed income” doesn’t justify that right now. I’ve got to be super thrifty and creative these days to get the looks that I’m dreaming about enter our current reality. When I saw some realistic looking cow fabric online and read some reviews on it, I had an idea to make a fake cowhide rug just for kicks and see how it turned out. I did just that, and I totally love the result! This fabric is fantastic, and the rug looks really cute. Let me share with you how I made a faux cowhide rug for our sitting room for less than 50 dollars and in under an hour.Continue reading

Make a Counter Top Phone Charging Station & Tablet Holder from a Picture Frame

I have to say that being “forced” to be extra thrifty over the past year or two because of a transition to double-self-employment has been a blessing in disguise. If you and/or your hubby are self employed and just starting out, you might know what I mean. You have to work A LOT, and the cash flow is pretty…. slow. It’s caused me to be extra careful with money and extra creative when it comes to finding solutions for problems. If I can make something new out of things I already have on hand instead of buying items, I’ll totally do it! Enter: this charging station &¬†tablet holder that I made for our kitchen counter. I’ve wanted to create something to hold our phones and tablets while they’re charging (or while I’m using one or the other to view a recipe). This corner of our kitchen seems to be the spot where all of our electronics end up so I made a holder that looked pretty on the counter, but it’s still functional.Continue reading

Video Tutorial: Make a Book Page Heart Wreath

Hearts, hearts, hearts. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I love ’em. My daughters do too, but it’s one of those chicken & egg things – I’m not sure if they naturally like them or if I’ve influenced them to like them. Regardless, we do a whole lot of crafts and art around here with heart shapes. Last week, Little C and I made a book page wreath and it was her idea to make it into the shape of a heart to display on our mantel for Valentine’s Day coming up. I never thought I’d be working on a Valentine’s Day mantel design, but the fact that Little C loves V-Day so much makes me excited for a lovey-dovey mantel too!Continue reading
