DIY Baby Teething Relief – Quick Ideas & Tricks

Yesterday was certainly not the best day of my life. Baby A was in so much pain! She’s getting her two top teeth, and she was crying all day long (which is so unlike her usually happy self).  Three cheers for miserable, teething babies…

I turned to my friends of Facebook and Twitter with a cry for help:

Teething-Baby-A-2

The response I got was SO helpful, as always.

Here are some of the ideas I received on how to soothe a teething baby. There are so many great ones here that I hope some of you will find helpful too! Many people reminded me that what works on one teething babe might not work on another, so keep trying different remedies.

  • Camilia “Camilia® is neutral-tasting and comes packaged in sterile, drinkable and unbreakable unit-doses, making it an easy-to-administer, and fast-acting way of soothing teething woes.”
  • Hylands Teething Gel – “A homeopathic combination for the temporary relief of symptoms of simple restlessness and wakeful irritability due to cutting teeth.”
  • Hylands Teething Tablets – “Hyland’s Baby Teething Tablets provide a natural, homeopathic formula for symptoms of simple restlessness and wakeful irritability due to the cutting of teeth. It reduces pain, inflammation, fever, drooling and the discomfort of teething.”
  • Unopened freezies to chew on (this is what we chose yesterday since I had one in the freezer and it was fast relief!)
  • Cold/frozen wash cloths to chew on
  • Razberry Teether – “First Hands-Free all Silicone teether, with stimulating Multi-Textures that soothe while they play for a happy teething baby – can be frozen for extra soothing comfort.”
  • Frozen fruit to gnaw on (with or without a mesh bag)
  • Amber teething necklace – “Used for centuries, Baltic Amber has been used for a variety of ailments from teething pain to arthritis. Scientific research has shown that succinic acid has a very positive influence on the human body. It improves immunity and the balance of acids when absorbed into the bloodstream, it stimulates the thyroid glands to help reduce drooling and soothe inflamed areas. Amber’s anti-inflammatory and therapeutic properties are recognised by allopathic medicine as a natural analgesic (pain reliever), which can help to relieve many painful conditions.”
  • Tylenol or Advil for pain relief

DIY Business & Blogging

Interview: Melanie of Farmers Market Online

From handmade baby clothing to locally-produced food, www.canadasfarmersmarket.com boasts a long list of small Canadian companies with high-quality products and family values – like you would find at your local farmer’s market! We were so excited when Melanie, mom to Ruby and owner of the site, contacted us – what an inspirational DIY Mommy with a wonderful business that not only shows what a great DIY Mommy she is, but how many other amazing DIY Mommies and families there are across Canada! Melanie was kind enough to share with us a little bit about her business, and some tips on how to be your own successful DIY Mommy:

Name:
Melanie Breitkreutz

Blog URL:
http://shopcanadian.posterous.com/

Website URL:
www.canadasfarmersmarket.com

Where do you live?
Kelowna, BC, Canada

How many children do you have and what are their ages?
1 little girl, Ruby. She is 21 months old. She is adorable, and fills each day with a lot of laughs. The challenge of being a working mom has been incredible, but totally rewarding and life changing for the better.

What kinds of things do you create/sell?

Prior to running Farmers Market Online, I sold freshly roasted coffee beans online. I sold that business in December, and currently do not sell any other products. I come from a very creative background and always have loved handmade, creating, and crafting. I think my first time selling something was when I was 8 for a fundraiser. I’ve been hooked ever since!

What inspires you?
People doing what they love. Life’s too short to not be passionate.

What makes your creations/products unique?

Farmers Market Online is web based market space where we connect online shoppers with great farmers market products from right across Canada. In itself it has proven to be a very unique service that Canadians are really excited about. FMO will always remain one of a kind because of its collection of handmade, farm-grown, artisan, organic, and specialty food products from British Colombia to PEI and because of the variety of small business owners that are in our community. Every day as new products come on to the online market FMO continues to re-shape and take on yet another fresh form. I love the excitement of an ever-evolving and growing line of great Canadian products. Shoppers- be excited!

If you had one piece of advice for other DIY mommies trying to market their creations/business online, what would it be?

Bring your creation to FMO! Lol… I say that partially as a joke, but of course we’d love to have you. On a more serious note I’d say my best piece of advice would be to market your product. Get the word out there! No matter how great your product is, if people don’t know you exist, then you don’t have a business. In a world with so much product at everyone’s fingers, it’s so important to stand apart and be seen.

Morning Sickness Remedies

By Kurtis Rose

Many women suffer needlessly during pregnancy. Sick feelings that come and go can be a minor inconvenience. They may also be a major problem. If you can just get through that terrible nausea and vomiting, your life will be so much better. Here are some morning sickness remedies to look at.

Crackers

Some women are helped by eating saltine crackers. You may wish to eat a few crackers before you get up in the morning. You may also try them as soon as you get up. Dry toast may work. You may have to force yourself to eat anything. If it works, it will be worth the effort.

Ginger

Ginger is a proven treatment for many types of nausea. Drinking ginger tea may be an effective method. It is best to discuss this with your doctor first, to be safe. Everything that you take in, can affect the baby. Ginger is also available in capsules. You can eat it from the spice container. However, you may get a burning from it, that is uncomfortable. One good way to get ginger is by drinking ginger ale. This is probably one of the safest methods, also.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon may work to get rid of that terrible nausea. You can chew cinnamon flavored gum. Make a piece of toast. Drizzle some honey on it. Sprinkle some cinnamon on the toast. This should be safe to take. You might try cinnamon suckers. Some women find that placing a cinnamon stick in their mouth, helps.

Acupressure

This is a completely safe method for nausea. You are not drinking or eating anything. Acupressure works on the principles of acupuncture. However, there are no needles. There are meridians that run through the entire body. This is a communication network for all parts of the body. Sometimes these pathways can become blocked. There are many pressure points on the body. Knowing the right place can remove these blockages and restore communication. This can help a variety of ailments. Nausea is one of them.

Peppermint

Peppermint can help some women with nausea. Make a cup of pepper mint tea and slowly sip it. You may also place peppermint oil in a cup of hot water. Gently sniff the pleasant aroma that comes from it.

Summary

Pregnancy can be a wonderful time. It can also be full of nausea and vomiting. You may find yourself desperately seeking morning sickness remedies. Try eating dry crackers or toast. Ginger or cinnamon may help. Peppermint may be a good choice. Acupressure may help you find relief.
