Make a Counter Top Phone Charging Station & Tablet Holder from a Picture Frame

I have to say that being “forced” to be extra thrifty over the past year or two because of a transition to double-self-employment has been a blessing in disguise. If you and/or your hubby are self employed and just starting out, you might know what I mean. You have to work A LOT, and the cash flow is pretty…. slow. It’s caused me to be extra careful with money and extra creative when it comes to finding solutions for problems. If I can make something new out of things I already have on hand instead of buying items, I’ll totally do it! Enter: this charging station & tablet holder that I made for our kitchen counter. I’ve wanted to create something to hold our phones and tablets while they’re charging (or while I’m using one or the other to view a recipe). This corner of our kitchen seems to be the spot where all of our electronics end up so I made a holder that looked pretty on the counter, but it’s still functional.Continue reading

A Zero Dollar Spice Storage Solution

I’m following along this great declutting challenge from Home Storage Solutions 101 the best I can. It’s great! I love how the decluttering sessions are limited to around 15 minutes per day – now THAT I can do! This week, we’re focusing on organizing our kitchen cabinets. Mine are pretty decent since we’ve only been in our new house for 18 months or so, but there are some cabinets that are already pretty out of control. One of them was my spice cupboard, and I wanted to share with you today a fun & free spice storage solution that I came up with.Continue reading

Our Vintage Industrial Kitchen – Now With More Colour!

As much as I love the black and white bones of our DIY vintage industrial kitchen, I’ve been craving the addition of colour in the space for quite a while now. The last few weeks of pregnancy have really ignited some sort of maniacal nesting monster in me, and it’s really worked to my advantage – I’m getting lots of projects done around the house! With the addition of some colour (in the form of fabric, paint and accessories), I transformed our “almost done” kitchen into my final, beautiful dream kitchen this past week.Continue reading

My Colourful Craft Room Office – Our DIY House

When we lived in our Garage House, my “craft room” was our tiny kitchen table and my “office” was a little 5 foot wide nook by the kids’ bedroom. They were not ideal spaces, but I managed to create a lot of fun things in those teeny tiny spots.

When we were designing our new house, I knew that having an office/craft room on the main floor was really important to me so we designed it into our house plan. This new office is perfect – it’s in a corner between the kitchen and living room and I can open the french doors to it if I want or close them for a completely private space. It’s truly a dream come true to finally have my very own space to create, dream, and even do boring (but necessary) things like paper work in a more organized environment.

Mood Board: Colourful Boho Craft Room & Office – Our DIY House

Currently, my “craft room” is my kitchen table (shared with our microwave and Hubby’s stash of paperwork) and my office is a 5 foot wide nook right next to Little C’s room (shhhhhhh… don’t type too loud)!

Needless to say, I’m ecstatic about having an office/craft room on the main floor of Our DIY House that has doors that can open to the kitchen and living room or close for privacy.

The look I want for this room is colourful and fun with a bohemian vibe. I want to include colours from the living room and kitchen for flow (yellow, red & turquoise) and it will have a desk and oodles of storage for paperwork, fabric and crafty supplies.Continue reading

Mood Board: Sunny Woodland Nursery – Our DIY House

I’m excited about every single room in our new house (because we’ll actually have rooms for individual things and people), but this nursery for Baby A is one of my favourites.

Baby A has never had her own room (because our current Garage House is too small for that). This new “sunny woodland” sunny woodland” nursery will be a spot that she can call her very own! It will be wonderful for all of us.

I want a fun and playful bedroom for Baby A with lots of sorbet-inspired colours (sunny yellow, cheerful coral-y pink and minty blue) and retro woodland animals. When I found this fabric panel from Fabric.com ( Woodland Tails Panel Blue), it really inspired this space.

Mood Board: Sunny Woodland Nursery - Our DIY House by The DIY Mommy. Sorbet inspired shades of yellow, pink, coral and mint with retro woodland animals make a fun and sweet little nursery.

The inspirations:

  1. DIY Recovered Glider
  2. Woodland Tails Panel Blue Fabric
  3. Lyrik Shade from IKEA
  4. Crib from IKEA
  5. Homespun Chevron Pink Rug from RUGS USA
  6. DIY Scalloped Bunting Banner
  7. It’s My Forest Walnut Clock from decoylab
  8. You Are My Sunshine print from The Wheatfield
  9. Tree Decal

(And my DIY crochet granny square blanket is in there too.)

What do you think – will Baby A feel happy in her new, sunny room-to-be?
