My friend Danielle is a busy mom of three young boys, and she’s a teacher at our local school. The past couple of years have been a huge challenge for her. She’s had to teach from home for a long period of time while trying to manage her kids and her busy life. Danielle’s dreamed of having her basement renovated so that it would give herself, her husband and her kids more room to enjoy life and work at home. She’s hired my husband Sean to do the basement renovation. I wanted to gift her with the design and styling of the space. She’s so deserving of this makeover, and I can’t wait to get into it!

Here’s how the basement looked BEFORE:

This awkwardly shaped, dark basement is used for several things: food storage, seasonal storage, the kids’ playroom and an office. Danielle hated the dingy feel of the space and that there wasn’t sensible storage for everything.

Now, here’s the floor plan and layout I came up with for this basement makeover:

The utility room will be framed out which leaves an L-shaped area where we’ll create a built-in desk for an office. The other side of the utility room will feature a TV corner, a sofa and floor-to-ceiling storage will be on the long wall, and food storage will be tucked away by the stairs with stylish doors.

As for the mood of the room, we’re going to turn it into a modern rustic industrial space that’s perfect for the whole family. It will feature shades of black, white and blue with warm wood toned accents. I’m thrilled to work with some sponsors who generously donated some amazing products to Danielle that we incorporated in this space!

Finally, here’s how the basement looks NOW:

Now, Danielle’s basement has tons of hidden storage for everything including a corner closet, a food storage area, a spot for her freezer, a barn door covering seasonal storage, and floor to ceiling IKEA cupboards for toys and office supplies. There are even more secret storage spots like an ottoman with storage inside that converts to a tray table and the humidifier hidden behind a large industrial clock on the wall.

The light, warm wall colour is accented by the bright, white trim and deep blue feature wall. Finally, wood and leather accents add further warmth, and plants throughout add some life.

  1. I love the barn door. I have been looking for a creative way to hide the water pressure valve that comes into my home and now I have it. Also, did you put a barrier between the concrete floor and carpet?

  2. You mention that a lot of the items are gifted by the manufacturers. How did you accomplish that?

  3. Besides the paint, what else did you use to brighten up the basement? Would love to know what lighting you used? Thanks so much for your inspiration.
