‘Tis the season to transform your home into a winter wonderland, starting with that cozy focal point—the mantel. Today I’m sharing creative and budget-friendly ways to hang garland on your mantel for the ultimate Christmas display. If you’ve ever wondered how to hang garland on a mantel, I’m excited to share all my tips and tricks with you!

I’ve decorated dozens of mantels for the Holiday season over the years, and I’ve learned a lot of tips and tricks on how to make them look full and gorgeous. Through trial and error, I’ve come up with the best method on how to hang garland on a mantel. The best part? It’s so easy!

Step 1: Optimal Placement for Maximum Impact

When it comes to hanging garland on your mantel, consider veering away from tradition. Instead of draping it over the top, try hanging it on the front for a fuller and more visually striking effect. This unconventional approach instantly adds depth and dimension to your Christmas decor, making your fireplace mantel a showstopper.

I used to simply drape my garlands on top of my mantels. This made them look thin, and it was hard to see all of the detail. Now when I hang them on the front of the Christmas mantel, I can enjoy them in all their full glory!

You can place a garland centered on a mantel for a symmetrical look. Alternatively, you can hang it draping on one side only for an asymmetrical option. If choosing the latter, make sure you have stockings or your Christmas tree on the opposite side so that your mantel is balanced.

Step 2: Command Cord Bundlers – Your Holiday Helper

Now that you’ve chosen the perfect placement, it’s time to secure that garland in place. Say hello to your new best friend: Command Cord Bundlers. You can find them here: https://amzn.to/3SUFxir (CAN) https://amzn.to/47rhQlJ (USA) These nifty little tools make hanging garland a breeze without leaving a mark on your mantel. The best part? They’re easy to remove, making cleanup a snap once the festive season is over. No more sticky residue—just pure holiday joy.

Stick them to the top of your mantel with the loops hanging in front of the mantel. Then, hang the garland by looping the Cord Bundlers around the strand of garland, and then clipping the strap onto the mantel.

Alternatively, you can use mini Command Hooks. Adhere them to the top of your mantel, and then use string or floral wire to tie around your garland and attach to the hooks.

Step 3: It’s All About the Perfect Fluff

Next, it’s ultra important to fluff all of the individual stems of your garland (if you’re using a faux garland). Pull each stem in a different direction to make your garland look full and luxurious. The difference between a fluffed and non-fluffed garland is extreme!

I prefer to have my garland swag down over the mantel, so I pull a lot of the stems downward to create this effect.

If your garland is longer than your mantel, gently curve the garland down both sides of the mantel for a draping look.

Step 4: Greenery Galore – Mix and Match for Fullness

To elevate your mantel decor, embrace the beauty of variety. Instead of sticking to a single type of greenery, mix and match different picks to add fullness and visual interest. Consider incorporating an assortment of pine, cedar, and eucalyptus picks to create a dynamic and textured look. Don’t be afraid to play with different shades of green to mimic the lushness of a winter forest.

You can also wind a faux greenery garland or two through the first garland for a full, fluffy look. I like weaving a eucalyptus garland through my faux pine garland for the textural interest.

Step 5: Hanging the Stockings

Take your mantel decor to the next level by hanging stockings slightly underneath the mantel with small Command Hooks. Layering the stockings underneath the mantel will give your Christmas mantel lots of dimension and texture.

You can also add ribbon bows to the stockings, or even to the mantel garland.

Step 6: Twinkle, Twinkle – Illuminate with Lights

No Christmas decor is complete without a touch of twinkle. Intertwine fairy lights or battery-operated LED strands within the garland to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. The gentle glow will cast a magical spell on your mantel, making it a cozy retreat during the festive season.

My favourite garland is pre-lit, but here are my favourite twinkling lights you could add to yours: https://amzn.to/47xStih (CAN) https://amzn.to/3QVelhR (USA)
