Fall and winter are the perfect seasons to bring the outdoors inside your home with some DIY crafts. One of my favourite crafts of the season is creating a beautiful wreath to hang from my front door or use as seasonal wall decor. Today, I’ll be sharing a simple and easy DIY pinecone wreath that you can make in a snap! Not only is it a great way to express your creativity, but it’s also a frugal and eco-friendly way to decorate your home for the Holidays.

Fall Pinecone Wreath DIY

There’s something so perfectly rustic and timeless about a pinecone wreath, and a simple cone wreath is SO easy to make. This DIY Fall pinecone wreath uses a grapevine wreath base, various sizes of pinecones, and a quick dry-brushing paint technique to give it lots of dimension. Use it as a festive touch for Fall, with your Christmas decorations, or even for post-Christmas decor… it’s such a lovely piece. Let’s make it!

Fall Pinecone Wreath DIY

Step 1: Gather your materials

The first step to creating your wreath is to gather all the materials you need. You’ll need pinecones (I gathered some from the ground and found small ones at Dollar Tree but you can also purchase them here), a hot glue gun, hot glue sticks, a grapevine wreath form, a small craft brush, and some acrylic off white paint.

You can also use a wire wreath form, but I prefer the textured organic look of a grapevine wreath form. Plus, it’s a lot easier to work with when making this particular style of wreath.

Tip: If you’re using pine cones gathered from the ground, baking them in the oven will help get rid of bugs and critters. First, wash the pinecones with water and dish soap to get rid of any dirt an debris. Let them dry. Then, place the pine cones on an aluminum foil lined baking sheet. Bake the pine cones in the oven for approximately 30 minutes at 225 F.

Step 2: Glue the pinecones to the frame

Once you have your materials, start by gluing the pinecones to the grapevine wreath frame using your hot glue gun. Be sure to glue the pinecones in such a way that they cover the front of form completely. You want the wreath to be full and lush, so glue as many pinecones as you need to achieve the look you want. I like to glue various sizes of pinecones to my wreath so give it lots of interest.

Step 3: Add some dimension with paint

If you want to add some dimension to your wreath, you can use some latex paint. Simply dip your brush into the paint and dab the brush on a piece of paper towel to get most of the paint off the brush so it’s almost dry (hence the name “dry brushing”). Then, quickly move your brush over the pine cones to put a small amount of paint on the edges of the cones, highlighting their texture and shape.

You can further embellish the wreath with a burlap ribbon bow or a small twine bow, but I love it plain and simple just like this!

Step 4: Hang your wreath

Once your wreath is complete, you can hang it on your front door, over the mantel, on your wall, or even use it as a table centerpiece for your Fall or Winter celebration. It looks gorgeous in the dining room as Thanksgiving decor. I also love this wreath paired with a copper coloured wreath hanger on the front door, or simply mounted with a pin on the wall. It’s a versatile piece and looks great in any location. I love it here on my living room wall!
